Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a hybrid dog breed that is a mix of a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky. As a result of the crossbreeding, this new type of dog combines the desirable traits from both breeds and often has a thick, double coat. Pomskies usually make great family pets and are often very outgoing and active dogs. They are generally clever and loyal and because of their alertness, make excellent guard and watchdogs. They can be prone to 'small dog syndrome' behavior issues, so it's important to properly train and socialize them at an early age.
Pomskies have a unique coat. It is often a combination of the Pomeranian's long and thick coat with the Siberian Husky's short and smooth coat. It is often very soft with an abundance of fluff, which gives it a distinctive look. The colors of the coat vary, but they usually have a combination of black, gray, tan or white. They are considered to be non-shedding, which is great for those that suffer from allergies.
Pomskies are a small and delicate breed of canine, and as such have special dietary needs and restrictions. It is important to be aware of what foods are safe to feed a Pomsky so as to keep them healthy and happy. Some foods, such as chocolate, coffee, alcohol, and large amounts of onions and garlic, can be toxic to Pomskies. Any food with a high sugar content should also be avoided. Additionally, foods that are hard and difficult to chew can cause oral injury. Small hard treats can cause choking, and rawhide bones should also be avoided.
Before getting a Pomsky, there are some essential items you should purchase in order to make sure your new pet is safe and comfortable.
Pomskies vary in size a great deal though generally speaking, they are much smaller than their parent breed, the Siberian Husky. Their typical adult weight ranges from 5 to 20 pounds, with their shoulder height ranging anywhere between 8-15 inches. Their size is dependent on the size of their parents, though it should be noted that some litters may have larger and smaller puppies. Due to their smaller size, they are easily able to adapt to almost any home environment and lifestyle. These pint-sized canine family members are intelligent and alert, serving as excellent companions.
Although the exact amount of time necessary to walk a Pomsky each day varies depending on age, activity level, size, and health, a good goal is to walk them for at least 30 minutes per day. It is important to keep in mind that Pomskies, like all breeds, require both physical and mental stimulation. Therefore, in addition to providing your pup with daily walks that involve activities like fetch and maze walking, an ideal walking schedule should also incorporate more focused, structured time, such as teaching them tricks or basic obedience commands.
Pomskies can make wonderful family dogs if they are properly socialized and their exercise and mental stimulation needs are met. They are loyal and, with the Pomeranian and Siberian Husky parent breeds being amongst the most intelligent of dogs, they can be trained relatively easily. Their adaptability and aptitude for learning, combined with their gentle, friendly personalities, mean that they can fit into almost any home.
Pomskies are known for their intelligence and can become very smart dogs. They are a cross breed between a Pomeranian and a Husky and benefit from the intelligence of both breeds. As puppies, Pomskies learn quickly and can be trained to pick up basic commands at a young age. With patience and consistency, they can learn more complex commands and tasks as well. As social animals, they can also pick up many behavioral cues by learning from their owners and other animals.
