Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a hybrid, or designer, dog breed that is the result of crossing a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky. Because they are a hybrid breed, they do not have a specific "class" of dog that they belong to. They generally have the high energy level and loyalty of a Siberian Husky, with the small size and alertness of a Pomeranian. While they are fairly new to the scene, with the first litters being bred in the early 2000s, they are growing in popularity because of their friendly disposition, loyalty, and their companionable size.
The Pomsky coat is a delightful combination of the Husky and Pomeranian breeds. The double coat of the Pomsky is made up of a soft undercoat and a coarser, thicker outer coat made from long guard hairs. Their fur can often be thick and fluffy, usually ranging in color from light gray to white, or even black and tan, sable or white and black. Moreover, the texture of the fur can range from silky to wavy or straight.
Pomskies require a diet specifically tailored to their size and activity level. Pet owners should avoid overfeeding their pup as they are smaller dogs and are more prone to gain weight. Food items that should never be given to a Pomsky include; chocolate, peanuts, raisins, onions, garlic, macadamia nuts, grapes and anything containing too much sugar or fat. Furthermore, cutting off protrusions from cooked bones, such as chicken wings or backs, is advised as the splinters can cause injury to the throat or intestines.
When beginning the process of preparing for your new Pomsky, there are some key steps you should take. First, you will need to secure a vet to provide ongoing care and guidance for your pup. Secondly, you should then obtain supplies for your pet things such as a collar, food, and toys should all be purchased. Finally, you will need to make sure your home is puppy-proofed in order to protect them from any hazards such as electrical cords or any breakable items.
It's impossible to make an exact guess as to how big your Pomsky puppy will grow, since the breed is a mix of Pomeranian and Siberian Husky, whose size ranges can vary. However, adult Pomskies generally reach heights between 10-15 inches at the shoulder, and weigh between 15-30 pounds. Moreover, growth rate and size can be affected by variables such as sex, genetics, nutrition, and exercise. As a rule of thumb, puppies reach their full size at around 1 year old, although this can take longer depending on the individual animal.
Pomskies can enjoy swimming depending on the individual dog. It is important to socialize and train a Pomsky early on and engaging in activities like swimming can help. While some Pomsky puppies may be naturally drawn to the water, others may be more hesitant. Slowly introducing them to the water is important and having positive reinforcement when they interact with it will help establish a safe and comfortable experience. Swimming should be supervised at all times to make sure the Pomsky is safe and comfortable.
Pomskies are a good fit for households with children. Generally, these designer dogs are happy, friendly, and affectionate around children. They bond easily with their human families, making them ideal playmates for children. Pomskies tend to be smart, eager to please, and willing to learn, making them adaptable family members that can thrive in various environments. With early socialization and obedience training, Pomskies can learn positive behaviors that can offer a lifelong friendship with your family and kids. All in all, Pomskies make great companions for households with children.
Training a Pomsky should be an enjoyable experience for both you and your pup! The amount of time needed for daily training will depend on the age of your Pomsky and what type of training you're doing. Generally speaking, it's recommended to devote about 15-30 minutes per day to basic commands, such as sit and come. If you're working on more advanced behaviors or tricks, you can spend up to 40-50 minutes per day. Additionally, you should also strive to fit in some daily playtime to bond and have fun with your pup.
