Questions & Answers
Pomskies are interesting because they are a relatively new breed that combines the best traits of two much-loved purebreds. Bred from the Pomeranian and Siberian Husky, Pomskies are not officially recognized by the American Kennel Club, but they are gaining in popularity. One of the most exciting aspects of this hybrid is that each pup is unique and offers an unpredictable combination of color and markings from its parent breeds. Pomskies are considered loyal, intelligent, active, and curious.
The Pomsky coat is absolutely stunning and flaunts a unique look. It is dense, long, and fluffy and typically has a combination of wolf-like colors that make them stand out. Pomskies have double coats with a soft and luxurious undercoat covered by a thick topcoat that helps keep them warm and protect them from harsh weather conditions. The length of the coat varies, as some Pomskies have shorter coats while others with longer coats tend to have a lion-like appearance.
Pomskies are small, energetic dogs that sometimes require special diets due to their genetically blended traits. Generally speaking, they will do best when they are fed a premium quality dry dog food with an appropriate balance of proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids. To meet their unique nutritional needs, look for a food formulated specifically for small dogs or a breed-specific diet. If possible, avoid foods with artificial coloring, flavoring, or preservatives.
Before getting a Pomsky, it is important to make sure you are properly prepared. These essentials include a collar and leash, food and water bowls, a comfortable bed, toys and treats, grooming tools such as a brush and nail clippers, a crate to help with housebreaking, and an exercise area that your Pomsky can use when you cannot give them the physical exercise they need. Additionally, it is important to plan out the budget for a Pomsky ahead of time; costs can include food, treats, vet visits, vaccinations, spay/neuter, and possibly unexpected medical costs.
Pomskies are typically considered small to medium-sized dogs, and they usually weigh an average of 8-15 lbs. However, these dogs can range in size depending on the parent breeds used in the cross, which include a Siberian Husky and Pomeranian. Generally, a full grown Pomsky will reach a max height of 15-17 inches and a weight of 22-30 lbs, making them medium sized at most. Consequently, Pomskies are not categorized as "big dogs", though some of them may reach close to or just above being classified as such.
It is recommended that Pomskies get a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise daily to keep them healthy and happy. The ideal amount of walking for a Pomsky on a daily basis can vary depending on the individual pup, however it's important that the exercise routine is consistent. Every day should include a minimum of 30 minutes of walking, however the amount can (and should) be increased depending on the activity level of your pup. Pomskies are an active breed and if they get enough exercise during the day, they'll be less likely to act out from boredom or energy.
Pomskies can make wonderful companions for first-time owners. With their willingness to please, intelligence, loyalty, and loving nature, they can be a great fit for those just beginning their journey as an owner. Pomskies also require minimal amounts of exercise and can be quite low maintenance, depending on the specific needs of the individual dog. However, because of their small size and strong guarding feelings for their family, training is a must for all first-time owners. Training can be a fun and rewarding experience that builds a special bond between pup and owner.
Pomskies are naturally intelligent dogs, with the right environment and training they can achieve amazing results. They are strong, independent thinkers, often making their own decisions fairly easily. They are highly adaptive and eager to please their owners, thus making them highly trainable. They also recognize quickly when they are being praised or rewarded for good behavior. Pomskies can remain engaged in activities with their owners for long periods of time and they are great problem-solvers.
