Questions & Answers
One of the most interesting things about Pomskies is their unique blend of the intelligence and active nature of the Siberian Husky with the hypoallergenic and cuddly nature of the Pomeranian. As a result, this hybrid breed is incredibly well-rounded and can make an excellent pet for a range of owners from those who want a pup who can hike the hills as well as keep up with agility training, to those who would simply like an agile and intelligent companion.
Pomskies are not inherently hypoallergenic, however their parent breeds the Pomeranian and the Siberian Husky often have a low-shedding coat that may reduce allergen levels; making them a good choice for those who suffer from allergies. Although, every person's individual response to allergens can vary and no breed of dog can be guaranteed to be 100% hypoallergenic. If having a hypoallergenic pet is important to you, you may want to look into a different breed.
Pomskies are a hybrid cross between a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky and can benefit from a high-quality, nutrient-dense diet tailored to their size. When considering what the best food is for your Pomsky, look for an option that is tailored to small or toy breed dogs with plenty of lean protein as a primary ingredient. You should also be mindful when selecting the food of the caloric content and any quality carbohydrates sources such as sweet potatoes, brown rice, and quinoa which will provide your pup with sustained energy, along with needed fiber.
Before you get a Pomsky, purchasing essential items like a bed, crate, food, water and food bowls, a leash and collar, and toys are all important. Additionally, as Pomskies are known for being intelligent and high-energy, providing other specific items like chew toys, distractions, puzzle toys, and interactive toys can help keep your new pup entertained. It's also important to purchase items to groom your pup to keep their coat soft and healthy, such as a comb, brush, shampoo, and conditioner.
Pomskies come in a range of sizes, depending on the parent breeds. Most typically, Pomskies are classified as a medium-sized breed, though some can be classified as either small or large. The size of a Pomsky pup is determined primarily by the size of its parents and whether it is a firstor second-generation breed. On average, first-generation Pomsky puppies weigh between 3 and 20 lbs and have an adult height of up to 15 inches tall, while second-generation puppies can reach up to 25 lbs and stand up to 18 inches tall.
Every dog is unique, so there is no one-size-fits-all answer to how much exercise a Pomsky should get. Generally, they need at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day which can include activities such as walking, jogging, or playing fetch. To make sure your pup is getting enough exercise, you can start by walking your Pomsky for 15 minutes twice a day and gradually increasing the time as you become more familiar with the endurance of your four-legged friend.
Pomskies make excellent family dogs! They are loyal, friendly, and playful. They form strong bonds with their owners and typically do well with children, as long as they are taught proper handling and socialization early on. They have a lot of energy and prefer to stay busy, so they may require more exercise than some other breeds. They typically aren't barkers, but their intelligence and independence can make them a bit challenging to train. With consistent, patient, and positive reinforcement, however, they can learn quickly.
Training your Pomsky should begin as soon as you bring them home. Start with basic commands like 'sit' and 'stay' and gradually move onto more complex tasks like walking on a leash or teaching them tricks. Provide a consistent routine and be patient with them. Offer rewards for positive results and remember to keep sessions short and sweet. For good, humane training, never use punitive methods such as punishment or heavy-handed tactics. Instead, focus on positive reinforcement with rewards that motivate your Pomsky. Give them breaks during training and never forget to provide plenty of hugs and love.
