Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a designer, or hybrid, breed of dog, commonly referred to as a "spitz type" of dog. They are produced by the intentional mixing of a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky. This medium-sized breed has a thick and soft double layer coat, often featuring the black, white, and tan markings of its larger Husky parent. Mostly known for their playful and friendly personality, they typically have a high energy level and thrive in an active family setting.
Pomskies are known for having a luxurious, dense coat of fur that is often likened to a teddy bear. The unique texture of their coat is a soft double-coat of medium to long length that is a combination of a Pomeranian's coat and a Siberian Husky's coat. The Pomsky coat tends to be thicker around the neck and chest and softer, thinner fur around the face and hindquarters. The colors and markings of a Pomsky's coat can vary widely, ranging from solid to piebald or sable.
Pomskies generally do not have special dietary needs compared to other dog breeds, however certain lifestyle factors like age, activity levels, and any relevant health conditions should be taken into account when deciding which dog food you should feed your pup. A good dog food should include balanced levels of protein, fat, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Additionally, if your dog has any specific allergies, you may want to consult with a veterinarian to determine the best possible diet for your pet.
To prepare your home for a new Pomsky, it's important to purchase the necessary supplies. Start by getting a comfortable bed or blanket, some toys, treats, food and water bowls, and a collar. You'll also want to make sure your house is Pomsky-proof, meaning put away items that may be dangerous or tempting for the little pup. Create a designated area for them to sleep and give them their own space where they can feel comfortable and secure. In addition, gather pet friendly cleaning supplies, like shampoo, brushes, and other grooming accessories.
Pomskies can come in many sizes depending on the particular parent breeds. Generally, a full grown Pomsky will range between 8-15 inches in height and 10-30 lbs in weight. However, due to the mix of Pomeranian and Siberian Husky, sizes can vary and some may be larger or smaller. Although both parent breeds are considered to be small to medium sized dogs, depending on the size of the parents, the resulting Pomsky could be considerably smaller or larger than the average range.
Absolutely! Pomskies can take in plenty of exercise and are great companions to take out running. When taking your Pomsky for a run, it is important to make sure you are aware of their environment and adhere to their specific needs. Pomskies should always be kept on a leash while running, as they are known to startle easily due to their small size. Additionally, take frequent breaks to ensure your Pomsky is staying hydrated and monitor to make sure they aren't becoming too exhausted or overworked.
Generally speaking, Pomskies do get along with other pets. They're loyal that way and have been known to form strong bonds with cats, rabbits, birds, mice, and ferrets. That said, introducing a new pet into the household must be done with caution and good supervision to ensure they all accept and get along with each other. Even then, depending on the personality of each, there may be some issues. It's important to slowly, and cautiously, introduce the animals to each other and if there are signs of aggression, to separate them.
The amount of time required to train Pomskies varies from dog to dog and can depend on the individual's behavior, strengths and weaknesses. Generally speaking, we recommend dedicating anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes of training time per day to reinforce good habits and proper manners. Time spent on discipline should be kept short and positive. When training Pomskies, it is important to be patient, consistent and understanding of their learning curve, as they are naturally independent and very stubborn. Through routine training sessions and with lots of patience, dedication and positive reinforcement, owners will see results over time.
