Questions & Answers
Pomskies are hybrid dogs, created by crossbreeding a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky. They typically weigh between 4 and 20 pounds and have a double coat like the Husky, but usually feature denser fur that can range from a variety of colors. Personality-wise, they can be affectionate, active, energetic, and outgoing. Pomskies can possess a combination of both the Pomeranian's friendliness and the Husky's intelligence, and so they usually make great family pets.
While Pomskies are often thought of as hypoallergenic due to their coats, there is a degree of unpredictability to their health, as they are a hybrid mix of two different breeds. As this hybrid is subject to the peculiarities of both breeds involved, it cannot be conclusively said that a Pomsky is inherently immune to allergies. However, the double-coat of the Pomskies usually sheds very little and is often softer than most breeds, resulting in fewer allergic reactions and a reduced amount of dander, which is the primary cause of pet allergies.
Pomskies are a mix of a Siberian Husky and Pomeranian, so they have a variety of nutritional needs, depending on the dominant breed. It's best to feed your Pomsky a diet with a mixture of wet and dry dog foods that have high protein content and are specifically designed for small breed dogs. Furthermore, it's important to make sure your pup has access to clean, fresh water; especially during the hot summer months.
Before you welcome your new Pomsky into your home, it's important to take the time to prepare for their arrival. Make sure to puppy proof your home and remove anything that could be a choking hazard or cause injury. Install baby-gates in the home to close off areas that could be off-limits to your pup. Choose an area in your home to establish as their ‘safe space’ and add a designated bed, water bowl, and food dish.
Pomskies are rarely considered small dogs, though it depends on the individual animal. Generally speaking, Pomskies are highly intelligent and energetic dogs with a much larger build than toy breeds. They typically reach 18-22 inches in height and weigh between 20-30 pounds. Their dense coat and active nature make them appear larger than their actual size. Pomskies are loyal and affectionate companions, and they require plenty of daily exercise and social interaction. With the ample devotion and care, Pomskies can make excellent and loving family pets.
A Pomsky is an active breed of dog, so providing a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise per day is recommended. Of these, at least 20 minutes should be dedicated to walking, as this allows your Pomsky to enjoy being active, while also providing an opportunity for them to take in all the sights, sounds and smells of the world around them. With this in mind, the ideal amount of time to walk a Pomsky per day is 30 to 45 minutes.
Pomskies get along typically well with children. They may be lively and energetic at times, but they typically have a sweet, gentle demeanor that makes them great companions for kids. A Pomsky's even-keeled temperament and companionability makes them a great choice for a family pet. They often enjoy an occasional cuddle from children, and they come in a variety of sizes to suit any family. When properly trained and socialized, Pomskies are loving, loyal, and can form strong bonds with their families.
Training a Pomsky is a highly rewarding endeavor, but it is not a simple task. Like any animal, Pomskies require a great deal of dedication and patience when it comes to training. Before embarking on the journey of training a Pomsky, it is important to research proper methods and be prepared to spend plenty of time and effort engaging with the pup. Additionally, having toys, treats, and other positive reinforcement tools on hand can further bolster the training process and help to create a stronger bond between the pup and its trainer.
