Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a mix between a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky. They typically have a fluffy double coat and an active playful personality. This breed is generally grouped into the "Designer Crossbreed" or "Hybrid" class of dogs. They usually mature in size to between 10-15 lbs. Interestingly, they can have a mix of traits from either parent breed, so appearances can vary quite a bit from one Pomsky to another. They often have the Pomeranian's energy and the Husky's intelligence, making them moderately difficult but very rewarding to train.
Pomskies, also known as Pomeranian-Huskies, are not considered hypoallergenic dogs as they can potentially trigger allergies in people. Though their fur is dense and thick unlike their Pomeranian parents, it is not considered to be hypoallergenic. Pomskies are hybrid dogs and each individual dog's coat can be different due to their mixed heritage. Some may have a coat that is more like their Pomeranian parent, while others may have a thicker, soft fur coat like their Siberian Husky parent.
Pomskies, being a hybrid of a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky, should not be fed table scraps, low-quality or unhealthy foods, or food intended for other animals. It is best to feed them high-quality foods specifically created with Pomskies in mind, such as premium kibble or raw diet options. Additionally, some human foods like garlic, onions, and grapes are toxic or dangerous for Pomskies and should be avoided. Consuming them can cause stomach distress, or worse, and care should be taken to keep them away from these foods.
Preparation for bringing home a new Pomsky can be both exciting and overwhelming. To get off to the best start possible, it's important to do some research about the breed and to make sure you're well-equipped with supplies to make your pup feel comfortable in their new home. Start by setting up the space they'll be living in, making sure it's free of hazards and equipped with necessary supplies like a comfortable bed, sturdy crate and plenty of toys. It's also important to consider what type of food, vaccinations and vet care your new pet will need.
Pomskies typically grow to about 9 to 15 inches in height, and they can range between 10 to 25 pounds in weight, depending on their gender, diet, and physical activity. Generally speaking, smaller-sized Pomskies tend to come from a smaller parent – a Siberian Husky parent may result in a larger pup. However, on average, Pomskies tend to be on the smaller side, perfect for someone looking for an unabashedly cute companion.
The amount of exercise your Pomsky needs each day is dependent on several factors, including age, health status, and lifestyle. A general rule of thumb is to walk your Pomsky at least twenty minutes a day, although more frequent walks or longer walks can be beneficial. One way to start is to aim for twenty minutes in the morning and twenty minutes in the evening. You can also break up your daily exercise into shorter walks throughout the day or try something new such as a hike or agility course.
Pomskies can make great pets for first-time owners, provided that they are committed to providing the necessary care and training. Pomskies aren't easy to train like some other breeds, and it takes patience to handle them properly. However, owners who are willing to put in the time and effort will be rewarded with a loyal, affectionate pet. Pomskies require two daily walks, a diet with proper nutrition and regular grooming. First-time owners should be sure to research and understand the breed's specific needs before making the commitment.
Pomskies can be considered smart dogs, though their personalities tend to vary. Some are very clever and can learn commands quickly, while others can take longer to learn. Nevertheless, with the right training, most Pomskies can learn basic commands and even some tricks with patience and consistency. They also possess some special characteristics, such as being easily bondable with their owners, enjoying the company of humans and being highly sociable. As with any dog, early socialization is highly important to help ensure your pup's behaviour grows into that of a well-adjusted and obedient pet.
