Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a hybrid, designer dog breed that is a mix between a Siberian Husky and a Pomeranian. They usually have a combination of their parent breed's characteristics, typically with the striking and beautiful husky eyes and markings, and a fluffy, soft coat from their Pomeranian side. They make great pets and are highly intelligent and energetic. They usually require a great deal of daily exercise to stay mentally and physically healthy. Pomskies are often independent thinkers and can be quite stubborn.
Pomskies have a unique coat that can vary from one to the next. Generally, the coat is thick, long, and fluffy; with some having straight, wavy or curly fur. Physically, their coat can resemble their parent breeds: Pomeranian and Siberian Husky. This usually results in a breed with a double coat, including an outer layer that is typically long and coarse, and an undercoat containing short, dense, and soft fur that keeps the pup warm in cold climates.
Pomskies tend to have a high metabolism, so they should receive a balanced diet of proteins, minerals, vitamins, carbohydrates, and fats to support their active lifestyle. An appropriate diet for a Pomsky should consist of high-quality dry or wet dog food that is nutritionally complete, designed for small breeds and made with natural ingredients. Treats, such as crunchy biscuits or homemade snacks, raw or cooked vegetables, cooked meat, nut butters, and eggs can also be added in moderation.
Before getting a Pomsky, you should equip yourself with some essentials. First, you should invest in a good-quality, comfortable and sturdy dog bed. You'll also need food and water dishes, a collar and leash, and a brush for grooming. You'll need to have plenty of toys to help keep your pup entertained, as well as a variety of treats. Finally, you'll need to provide your Pomsky with vaccinations, flea and tick control, and regular vet checkups, so it's important to have your vet's contact information on hand.
Pomskies are hybrid dogs, so it really depends on which parent they take more after. While Pomeranians can range from 3 to 7 pounds, a Siberian Husky mix is generally between 15 and 30 pounds. So while a smaller Pomsky might remain on the smaller side, most Pomskies are considered larger dogs and will finish at least medium in size. Athletic and energetic, they require plenty of exercise and will do best with a family that can provide daily walks and, ideally, an outdoor space for them to run.
Per the American Heart Association, adults should get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week to maintain good health, or 30 minutes per day, 5 days per week. That being said, your Pomsky should also get a minimum of 30 minutes of physical activity every day. Depending on their age, breed, and overall health, they may need more or less daily exercise than this. If your Pomsky is a puppy, you may want to start off slowly and gradually increase their exercise over time so that they get used to it.
Pomskies, as with any other breed of dog, have the potential to get along with other animals in the home. It all depends on the individual temperament of the dog as well as the other animals within the environment and how they react to each other. It's important to establish rules, boundaries and expectations for your Pomsky early on in order to ensure positive interactions between all of the furry family members. Socializing your Pomsky with other family pets is a great way to get them accustomed to their presence and help ensure a cohesive relationship.
Training a Pomsky should be done on a daily basis to ensure that the dog is able to learn proper behaviors. The amount of time needed to train a Pomsky will vary depending on the individual dog's ability to learn and its temperament. However, it is generally recommended that owners spend 10-15 minutes a day training their Pomsky, with longer obedience sessions of at least 30-45 minutes at least once a week. This will help ensure consistent progress and good behaviors.
