Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a designer breed of canine created from combining a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky. Generally, they are considered a “toy” class breed, combining the attributes of both parents. They are mobile, intelligent, active and affectionate dogs, weighing between 10 and 30 pounds and reaching a maximum height of about 15-17 inches. They tend to have thick and soft fur that comes in a variety of colors, and generally have the signature Husky “mask” on their faces.
Managing allergies with Pomskies can depend on how severe the allergies are. If you are considering adoption of a Pomsky and suffer from allergies, it is best to visit the breeder beforehand and interact with the breed. If possible, wear a full-body suit and bring a set of clothes to change into afterwards to test your reaction. If the breeder is able to provide a hypoallergenic Pomsky, that can help minimize your allergies.
Pomskies should not be fed onions, garlic, chocolate, grapes, raisins, or anything with added sugar, as these foods can be toxic or cause stomach issues to Pomskies. It's also important to avoid feeding Pomskies raw eggs, raw meat, or raw fish, as these could contain harmful bacteria which can be harmful to Pomskies. As well, sticky snacks such as taffy and gum should also be avoided, since they could stick to the back of their throats and cause choking.
Preparing for your new Pomsky can be an exciting and daunting task! Before bringing home your pet, make sure their vaccinations and other medical needs are up to date. To make sure you have the supplies you need, stock up on food and treats, toys, bedding, bowls, and any other necessary items. Also, be sure to puppy-proof your home before your pet arrives ensure that hazardous items and items that can be easily chewed on are not within reach.
Pomskies come in a variety of sizes, with the large size usually being classified as medium-large to large. Depending on the exact type of Pomsky and the genetic influence of the parent breeds, the size may vary anywhere from 12" to 20" tall and approximately 12 to 40 pounds in weight. As with any breed, there's possibly some variation of size due to doggo's age, sex, and parentage. As a general rule, however, males tend to be larger, heavier, and taller than females.
Pomskies are relatively active dogs with strong herding instincts. Generally speaking, they need around an hour of exercise every day, ranging from a brisk 1-2 mile walk, to a 10-15 minute jog with some playtime in between. Activities such as agility or obedience courses kept to two or three days a week are also beneficial. Additionally, Pomskies need plenty of mental exercise to stay engaged and stimulated, as they are highly intelligent dogs that need intellectual activities to keep from becoming bored or destructive.
Pomskies can typically get along with other pets if they are introduced gradually and have been properly socialized. With the Pomsky's hybrid ancestry, it takes some time for the animal to adjust to its new environment, companions and owner. The best way to ensure that Pomskies get along with other pets is to introduce them slowly and positively in order for the pup to develop a bond with its new family. It is important to remember that all dogs are individuals and may do better being the only pet in a home.
Pomskies are highly intelligent and can learn commands quickly. Known for their friendly and outgoing personalities, Pomskies often thrive with proper training and reinforcement. They tend to be eager to please their owners, and their eagerness makes them very trainable. Pomskies are relatively active dogs and require some mental and physical stimulation to keep them mentally and physically healthy. With their intelligence, you can teach them various tricks and commands like other large breeds. Of course, any training should be done with patience, consistency, and some positive reinforcement.
