Questions & Answers
Pomskies are truly one of a kind when it comes to hybrid dog breeds because they combine the beauty, intelligence, and loyalty of both Pomeranians and Siberian Huskies. Not only are they incredibly intelligent, but they are also incredibly affectionate and loyal to their owners. Their impressive working drive lends them to many different types of activities including agility, obedience classes, flyball competitions, and much more.
Pomskies are not technically hypoallergenic, as no breed of dog is. Pomskies are a hybrid breed, resulting from the mating of a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky. Since they are a hybrid, there will be some variation in the characteristics of each litter of Pomskies, but typically they have a double-layer coat of fur that requires frequent grooming and shedding, so may not be the ideal breed for those with allergies. Owners of Pomskies often report that the breed is not as likely to activate allergies as some other breeds.
Feeding a Pomsky requires taking into account the size of the breed, and generally what you'll want to provide is a high-quality, high-protein, nutritionally-balanced diet. For puppies, look for growth or all life stages formulas that meet the nutritional levels established by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO). While adult Pomskies need food that supplies energy and is tailored to their size, be sure that the food still contains adequate levels of protein and fat. Dense and low fat are a must.
Before getting a Pomsky, it's important to make sure you have all the essentials. To start, you'll need food and water bowls, toys, a leash and collar, treats, a crate or kennel, and a bed or cushion. Additionally, you should have a brush, a nail trimmer, and toothbrush and toothpaste for grooming. You'll also need food specifically designed for puppies. It's a good idea to research in advance which food is best for a Pomsky and pick up a good quality brand.
Pomskies usually come in small to medium sizes, with a full-grown breed typically measuring anywhere from 9 to 14 inches in height and 10 to 20 pounds in weight. Pomskies come in a variety of colors, including white, black, and all shades of grey, as well as a mix of the three. Depending on their physical characteristics, such as thicker fur coats, Pomskies may also range in size from more petite-sized dogs to larger ones. They are intelligent and possess a strong instinct for protection, making them great companions and guardians.
Pomskies are energetic and require quite a bit of physical activity in order to stay healthy. To meet their exercise needs, they need an hour or two of physical activity every day. Dividing this time into several shorter periods of activity throughout the day is usually the best approach. To get the most out of your Pomsky's daily exercise, add in some variety of activities such as walking, hiking, running, playing fetch, agility training, or swimming. Along with physical activity, make sure you're providing plenty of mental stimulation for your Pomsky to keep them happy and satisfied.
Generally speaking, Pomskies are known to be exceptionally friendly and gentle with children, making them ideal family pets. Not only are they known for their love of play and attentiveness, but are also intelligent, so they can often be trained to respond to basic commands. That being said, it's important to note that all dynamics between any animal and a human should follow the normal safety guidelines, such as teaching children to respect the animal's space and to never poke, pull, or otherwise aggravate it.
Training a Pomsky is rarely said to be easy, however, with the right approach and consistency, it is possible. The process of training is more nuanced than most people realize and there are certain basic tips to follow that can make the process easier. First and foremost, Pomeranians are highly intelligent and respond well to positive rewards, so approach the training process by showing patience and reward their efforts. Additionally, Pomskies learn best when the commands are short and consistent, so using the same phrasing each time and short verbal commands are the most efficient.
