Questions & Answers
Pomskies are quite fascinating because they are an emerging designer pet, thought to be a cross between the Siberian Husky and the Pomeranian. Unlike other dogs, Pomskies come in all different sizes, varying from tiny to normal sizes, and they can come in long-haired and short-haired variations. They are also incredibly bright, with high IQs, and known as a relatively independent breed. Pomskies are even said to have an exceptional stamina, enabling them to to play for long periods of time or do regular exercise with their owners.
Pomskies are an adorable designer dog breed that mixes the Pomeranian and the Siberian Husky. Their coat is one of their defining features, and can be a mix of either two parent breeds or something entirely unique. Generally, Pomskies have a thick double coat with a soft undercoat and a harsh topcoat. Colors vary from light brown to white with gray, black, or tan. Their tail is normally fluffy with longer fur while their legs and stomach area have shorter fuller fur. Pomskies tend to shed moderately throughout the year, but more so during the seasonal shifts.
Pomskies typically enjoy eating high-quality dog food made from natural and organic ingredients. Depending on age and breed, their daily food intake should be composed of either lamb, beef, chicken, or fish mixed with complex carbohydrates such as sweet potatoes, corn, barley, or wheat. Healthy snacks can be offered in moderation to supplement meals and promote general wellbeing, and these can include carrots, apples, bananas, and celery. In your first few weeks of ownership, it is important to incorporate a transition period where you reduce the old meals gradually and introduce the new food into your pup's diet.
Before bringing home a new Pomsky, it is important to take some preparation steps to ensure a smooth transition. Begin by researching the breed to get a better understanding of their needs and keeping requirements. You also want to create a warm and safe environment for the pup. Stock up on supplies like food, treats, toys, a crate (if necessary), and a leash. Additionally, decide if the pup will need any vaccines or other medical needs and make an appointment with the veterinarian.
Pomskies are hybrids created by mixing a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky, so their size varies significantly. On average, a full grown Pomsky will stand between 10 to 15 inches at the shoulder and typically weigh between 12 to 30 pounds. Therefore, a Pomsky is considered a small to medium sized breed, falling somewhere between a toy and a midsize breed. With that said, their size can depend on the size of the parents, and some have even grown to reach 20 pounds or more.
Pomskies can actually make very good swimmers! They are a mix of two breeds that usually have a strong affinity for water, the Siberian Husky and the Pomeranian. Therefore, most Pomskies will enjoy swimming, but it should be mentioned that the amount of enjoyment and swimming ability can vary from Pomsky to Pomsky. In some cases, Pomskies may even have a fear of the water. That said, many Pomskies have a lot of fun in the water and are able to do basic swimming and fetching.
Pomskies can get along with kids very well. They possess many of the same traits as Pomeranians, such as playfulness and gentleness, and these traits make them excellent companions for children. They tend to follow their owners everywhere, including around children, so they can give them plenty of affection and attention. The breed is intelligent, so they may respond to children's cues and commands. Furthermore, they typically have a low-to-medium exercise requirement, making them less likely to step on or knock over young children.
It is recommended to spend at least 30 minutes daily training Pomskies as this will help to keep them active and engaged. This amount of time can be divided up into two or three shorter sessions if preferred, allowing for time in between for the Pomsky to take breaks and rest. It is also important to find the balance between too much and too little training as too much can be just as detrimental as too little. As with any training, it is important to reward the Pomsky for their good behaviour and provide plenty of interactive, positive reinforcement.
