Questions & Answers
A Pomsky is a crossbreed dog that is created by breeding a female Pomeranian with a male Siberian Husky. Unlike some other designer dogs, the Pomsky originated in the United States in recent years. Though they have become increasingly popular in the last several years, they are still rare and coveted puppies. Pomskies are known for their regal looks, often with a beautiful thick coat ranging in shades of white, grey, black, brown, cream, and red.
Pomskies, the hybrid breed of the Pomeranian and the Siberian Husky, are not considered a hypoallergenic breed of dog due to the possible presence of a coat known to cause an allergic response in some individuals. While some dogs of the Pomsky breed may be low shedding, there is no guarantee that they will not produce any allergic reactions. It is therefore advised to always research the breed and consult a qualified veterinarian prior to committing to owning a Pomsky, or any dog breed for that matter, to ensure that it is a suitable choice for allergies sufferers.
Pomskies have different dietary needs than many other breeds of dog, in order to stay healthy and maintain their energy levels. It is important to feed your Pomsky a high-quality dog food, as well as supplementing it with vegetables, fruits and in some cases, human-grade meat. Avoid feeding your Pomsky anything that contains sugar, artificial sweeteners, or any other kind of chemical ingredient; these substances can be damaging to a dog’s health. Many human foods, such as those that are highly processed or high in fat, should also be avoided.
Preparing your home for your new Pomsky should begin as soon as possible. Get the supplies you'll need ahead of time, including a collar, leash, food and water dishes, beds, toys, grooming equipment, and a containment system such as a crate. Ensure your home is puppy-proofed to avoid any potentially hazardous situations. Make sure items like cords, small plastic objects, and garbage cans are out of reach. Identify a safe area for your Pomsky to stay in when you are not home or able to supervise them to protect them from dangerous situations or injuring themselves.
The size of your Pomsky puppy will depend on the size of their parents. On average, a Pomsky is between 15 and 25 pounds and typically 10-15 inches in height, making them a bit bigger than a Chihuahua but smaller than a Siberian Husky. It's important to remember that the size of your Pomsky puppy can vary, depending on their specific parents. Some Pomskies may be larger or smaller than the average size. If you have any specific concerns about the size of your puppy, be sure to discuss them with the breeder.
The amount of walking you should do with your Pomsky depends on its individual fitness level, age, and general wellness. Generally speaking, it's recommended to give your dog at least fifteen minutes of cardio-intensive activity each day. If your Pomsky is active and healthy, then you'll want to increase their daily walks marginally by adding an additional 5-10 minutes each day. If your pup is a couch potato, you'll want to stay closer to the 15-minute recommended time frame.
Generally, Pomskies are very loyal and loving towards children so the answer to the question 'Do Pomskies get along with kids?' is a resounding yes! Pomskies thrive when surrounded and loved by children and they can be very protective of them as well. Pomskies are classified as lap dogs and love to give plenty of affection to the ones they bond with, especially kids. They have plenty of energy to keep up with most children and form very strong relationships with them.
Pomskies are a relatively new breed, developed by breeding the courageous and intelligent Pomeranian with the loyal, independent Siberian Husky. In terms of exercise, Pomskies are a combined blend of the two breeds; eager to explore with a high energy levels, but only requiring moderate amounts of exercise. While the exact amount of exercise your Pomsky will need is specific to each dog, the general recommendation is at least 30 minutes of exercise per day.
