Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a hybrid breed of dog, developed from the combination of a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky. This relatively new breed of dog has been gaining traction for its unique combination of characteristics. Pomskies are typically known to be friendly and intelligent, and they love to be around people. They tend to be stubborn, but can be trained with consistency. They are usually high energy and require a lot of daily exercise, which can involve long walks or hikes.
The Pomsky coat is definitely one of a kind! It is incredibly soft and fluffy with typical Husky colors such as grey, black and white. The coat is composed of two layers: topcoat and undercoat. The topcoat is long, straight and silky, protecting the dog from the elements. The undercoat is resilient and thick enough to keep the animal warm in cold temperatures.
Pomskies have a fairly straightforward dietary requirement. They are omnivores, so they generally eat the same things humans do, but in smaller proportions. As with all dogs, they require a balanced diet that provides a mix of proteins, fruits, vegetables, and carbohydrates. When feeding a Pomsky, it's best to opt for high-quality kibble or canned food that's specifically formulated for their size and energy level. In addition to a healthy diet, they can benefit from occasional treats such as small pieces of cooked meat, fruits, vegetables, or an occasional chew bone.
Prior to bringing your new Pomsky puppy home, it is important to be prepared so that the transition for your pup is as smooth and comfortable as possible. Take time to puppy proof your house by ensuring there are no hazardous or curious items in reach, such as wires or cleaning detergents. Assemble all the necessary supplies such as puppy food, water and food bowls, an accurately fitting collar and leash, a bed, toys, and treats. Consider taking your pup to the vet for their first vaccination and set up a regular schedule for checkups and care.
Pomskies vary in size depending on their parent breeds, the Pomeranian and the Siberian Husky. Pomeranians tend to weigh 7-11 pounds, while Siberian Huskies can weigh up to 60 pounds. Since Pomskies are a mixed breed, they can range anywhere between those two sizes, but most tend to be on the small side, usually ranging between 10-25 pounds. Therefore, Pomskies are often considered small dogs, but not all of them fall within the same size range.
Pomskies are an active and energetic breed and require a large amount of both mental and physical exercise to keep them in optimum health. To give your pup robust health, they need to be taken for multiple daily walks that include a varied terrain, ideally off-leash in a safe area with plenty of room for them to explore. Additionally, depending on your own preference, they should be engaged with playful activities, such as fetch and agility games, for at least an hour a day.
Pomskies are intelligent, energetic, and affectionate companions, making them a great breed for first-time owners. They can be a bit strong-willed, however, so it’s important that their owners are comfortable with assertive behaviors. They love to spend time with their owners and adapt well to their environment, so they’re perfect for apartment living and small homes.
Training a Pomsky should be done daily, however the amount of minutes necessary varies. It depends on the age of the pup, their energy level, and the type of training you wish to accomplish. Generally, Puppies require more frequent and shorter training sessions, while adult Pomskies usually require fewer but longer sessions. Young puppies may need five to seven sessions a day, lasting no more than 10 minutes each. As your pup matures, you can gradually increase the duration of the training session, allocating several fifteen to twenty minute sessions every day.
