Questions & Answers
Pomskies are an interesting hybrid breed of dogs. They are created by crossing a Siberian Husky and a Pomeranian, and become known as a “designer breed”. Pomskies often have a thick and soft double coat, which ranges from light to dark gray. They have an alert nature and love to be around people and are extremely intelligent when it comes to problem solving. Pomskies can also be trained to do amazing tricks because of their intelligence and level of obedience.
Pomskies are in fact considered a low-shedding breed. Pomskies possess the coat genes of both the Pomeranian and Siberian Husky, and as such, typically do not shed as much as a purebred Husky. Of course, individual results can vary based on which coat genes are more prominent in the pup. That said, Pomskies tend to have thick, double-layer coats that require consistent brushing and grooming to keep it from becoming matted or knotty, although they don't require as much maintenance as some other double-coated breeds.
Pomskies have some special dietary needs due to their size and energy level. As a medium-sized breed, they require a balanced diet to meet their nutritional requirements. A well-rounded food combining high-quality protein, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables can provide all the energy and vitamins they need. They may also need an additional amount of Omega-3's, antioxidants, and vitamin E to ensure long-term health. For puppies, it's very important to choose the correct food for their growth stage. Adult Pomskies may require smaller portions more often to maintain their ideal weight.
Pomskies do have some specific requirements that vary from breed. Generally, these fluffy, lovable designer dogs need daily exercise and lots of socialization. Proper nutrition is important and an enriching environment is recommended so they stay excited and stimulated. They also have thick coats that will require regular grooming and periodic trips to the groomer to keep them looking their best. As for health, Pomskies can be prone to certain conditions, such as hip dysplasia, allergies and eye problems, so regular vet check ups are recommended.
Pomskies come in a wide variety of sizes. Exact size will depend on the knowledge and experience of the breeder, however, the average range of sizes can be anywhere from 8–15 pounds for an adult Pomsky. The size will also depend on the male and female parents, and the ratio of each. Typically, a Pomsky that is made up of 50% Pomeranian and 50% Siberian Husky parentage will be around 11–16 pounds full grown.
It depends largely on the age, size, and energy level of your Pomsky. Generally speaking, a thirty-minute walk per day should suffice for smaller, older Pomskies. When it comes to larger and more active Pomskies, however, it's best to split their exercise into two fifteen-minute chunks of walking, or one thirty-minute block, each day. Walking frequency and duration should also be tailored to the individual Pomsky's needs, so that way they stay healthy and happy!
Pomskies are an excellent breed of dog for families. While there is no one size fits all type of pet, Pomskies generally share traits with both the Pomeranian and the Siberian Husky and can be an ideal pet for someone looking for an energetic, intelligent and loyal breed. They make great family dogs because they thrive on attention and love to interact with their people. They are also highly trainable and tolerant, making them a great fit for homes with children.
Training your Pomsky is key to giving them a safe and happy home. First and foremost, start by establishing yourself and your Pomsky as the leader of the pack. This creates a sense of trust and security that is essential in establishing consistent and effective training. Next, it is important to have a plan on the kind of training you will be implementing. Positive reinforcement is a very effective method of training and it helps your Pomsky to understand what behaviors are acceptable and expected. Utilizing commands, treats, and consistency will allow you to start seeing positive behavior quickly.
