Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a designer hybrid breed created by crossing a Pomeranian with a Siberian Husky. As a result, they exhibit characteristics of both breeds, making them a hybrid class of companion dogs with a unique physical appearance and temperament. They are usually small to medium sized, with a thick and soft coat and curled wedge shaped muzzle. Due to their friendly personalities, they are well suited to a family home or house full of activity. Pomskies are a breed known for their intelligence, affectionate nature, and an ability to socialize and bond well with their owners.
Pomskies have a unique coat of fur, often described as a combination of the Siberian Husky's plush fur and the Pomeranian's thick coat. The coat is dense, with a variety of colors from white, black, to shades of grey and brown. It is usually not a single color but rather is often found with two colors in it. The type and length of the fur is different for each pup, but generally they have medium lengths of fur and an oval head with a tapered muzzle.
Pomskies should not be fed table scraps, rawhides, or bones as these can be hard to digest and can cause GI upset or punctured intestines. You should steer clear of processed foods, and focus on foods that are high in protein and contain nutritional supplements. A diet rich in protein and containing omega fatty acids, probiotics, and vitamins and minerals is best. Avoid high sugar and carbohydrate diets as the Pomsky is a small breed and can easily gain weight on this type of diet.
Preparing for your new Pomsky pup is key to making sure the transition is successful. Firstly, stock up on all the necessary items, including food and bedding for your pup, as well as toys and a collar. Secondly, consider training and socialization for your pup so that they understand the limits of the house and don’t become destructive. Obtaining basic information on breed types and looking for local breeders/veterinarians can aid in this process too. Thirdly, make sure your home is safe and secure to ensure a smooth introduction.
Pomskies typically grow to between 10 and 15 inches in height at the shoulder and weigh between 10 and 30 pounds when fully grown. The size varies depending on the genes present in the breed and whether the puppy inherits the smaller genes from the Pomeranian, or the larger genes from the Siberian Husky. Generally speaking, bred responsibly, the Pomskies will not get too large – yet they might still show size variations, making it hard to have a one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to their size.
Pomskies are an active and energetic dog breed, with hybrid vigor allowing for a wide variety of activity levels. They require daily physical and mental exercise for staying healthy and happy. From long walks to swimming, Pomskies enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, especially when accompanied by a loving owner. They also enjoy playtime at a park with doggie friends or simply playing fetch in the backyard with toys. While indoors, they may partake in indoor games of tag or agility training. Pomskies are very lively and love to have something to keep them occupied.
Pomskies are known to make loyal and loving companions and, in most cases, get along very well with children. They are intelligent, fun, and friendly, which makes them an ideal pet for families. Pomskies are social and like to be around people. As with any other pet, it is important to start early in teaching children to respect your Pomsky and the importance of proper interaction with animals. It is important for children to understand and follow basic hygiene and safety rules whenever handling animals.
Training a Pomsky can depend on the individual dog and its personality. Although they are highly intelligent dogs, Pomskies can sometimes be stubborn and will require patience. With consistent positive reinforcement and a structured training environment, most Pomskies can be well trained. It is important to note that the earlier you start training your Pomsky, the higher the chances of it becoming more manageable. However, training Pomskies is not impossible but may require more effort than other breeds. The key is to start as early as possible to encourage your pomsky to pick up good behaviors.
