Questions & Answers
Pomskies are classified as a designer hybrid breed of dog, resulting from the genetic combination of a Pomeranian and Siberian Husky. While not yet recognized by the American Kennel Club, they are classified by the International Designer Canine Registry, as well as many other canine registries. Though there is certain variability and no predictable set of traits amongst the puppies, Pomskies typically share the same general inherited body types from both parent breeds, while producing their own unique and individual adaptations.
While Pomskies may shed less than other mixed breeds, there is no guarantee that they are hypoallergenic. Though it is highly unlikely that people with pet allergies will experience allergic reactions to this breed, the best way to check is to spend some time in close contact with a Pomsky and monitor any reactions. As a hybrid breed, Pomskies have not been recognized by the American Kennel Club and there is no established breed standard.
Pomskies tend to have a hearty appetite and do best when they are eating a high-quality, balanced diet. Generally, the best diet for a Pomsky is a mixture of dry kibble and wet canned foods, with the occasional addition of healthy treats such as boiled chicken or vegetables. To ensure they remain healthy, it is important to monitor their diet and the amount of food they eat, as they can gain weight quickly due to their larger than average appetites. A Pomsky's diet should also include fresh, cool water that is available at all times for them to drink.
Preparing your home for a new Pomsky requires some thought and effort. First, think about where you would like your new pet to sleep and place a cozy bed in the selected spot. Secondly, research their dietary needs and have the necessary food and treats ready for them on arrival. Thirdly, make sure that any areas in your home that are off-limits to your Pomsky have been blocked off with pet gates or other barriers. This will allow you to safely and comfortably introduce your new pet to your home and family.
Pomskies are unique and vary greatly in size. Generally, they are considered medium-sized dogs, although they can range from small to large depending on the size of the parent breeds. Some Pomskies may be considered large if the parent Pomeranian is over 12 pounds and/or the Siberian Husky parent is over 30 pounds. However, even the largest Pomsky is typically much smaller than an average-sized purebred dog.
Pomskies are an energetic breed that needs plenty of exercise. They are fairly active and have lots of energy to expend, so they require daily physical activity, such as running, playing, and taking leisurely walks. Depending on size, you should aim to get your Pomsky between 30 minutes to an hour of physical activity per day. To keep him stimulated and happy, consider giving your pup activities that require mental stimulation, such as organized sports, agility, obedience classes, or fun, interactive games. Make sure to adjust the amount of exercise to his age, size, and physical condition.
Pomskies can generally make good families companions because of their engagement, intelligence, and enthusiasm for play. Depending on the individual Pomsky, they can generally do well with kids. However, they may need additional behavior training and socialization to make sure they are comfortable in the presence of your young family members. Make sure to monitor interactions between kids and your Pomsky. When introduced gradually, they can be incredibly enjoyable, loyal, and protective addition to your family.
Training your Pomsky is easy if done correctly. Start by finding specific positive and negative reinforcement methods that work best for your pup, such as gentle praise or treats as rewards, or gentle corrections when appropriate. Next, use short, consistent sessions to teach fundamentals such as sit, stay, and come commands. Be sure to give your pup plenty of opportunities to practice the behaviors before expecting them to execute perfectly. Always end the sessions on a positive note with rewards. Additionally, teach proper social skills such as proper meeting and greeting techniques, and doggie manners.
