Questions & Answers
A Pomsky is a hybrid of a Siberian Husky and a Pomeranian. Generally, these two breeds were selectively bred to create the Pomsky. Generally, they are smaller in size than the Siberian Husky but with a similar temperament and coloring. The Pomsky has become a popular pet due to its fluffy coat, intelligence, and playful nature. They generally need a lot of attention and exercise, so they are not a good choice for someone who is away from home a lot or has a very busy lifestyle.
Pomskies have gorgeous coats that are soft, thick, and dense. They come in a wide range of colors, including white, gray, sable, black and tan, brown and cream, and variations of each. Their coats also vary in texture, as some may be wavy and fluffy while others are shorter and curlier. Their longer hair around the neck and chest and longer tail fur gives the breed a 'teddy-bear' like look. Their hypoallergenic coat makes them perfect for those who suffer from allergies.
Pomskies are typically healthy and have relatively limited nutritional needs, but there are some foods that should be avoided to ensure your dog stays healthy. Unhealthy snacks, such as chocolate and other sweets and sugary snacks, should be avoided to reduce the risk of disease and obesity in your Pomsky. Additionally, table scraps can be unhealthy for Pomskies due to their high fat content. Raw or undercooked meats should also be avoided due to their potential to contain certain bacteria such as salmonella.
Before bringing home a Pomsky, it's important to make sure you have the necessary supplies to make sure it's safe and healthy. To ensure your pup's well being, you'll need to buy items like a collar with tags, food and water dishes, toys, treats, a sturdy leash, a bed and crate, and a brush and shampoo for grooming. It's also advised to get a pet health insurance policy as a precaution and stock up on heartworm and flea and tick treatment to ensure your Pomsky stays healthy.
Pomskies are considered a small to medium breed of dog, depending on the particular mix of a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky. They typically grow to between 5 and 15 inches in height and may weigh anywhere from 8 to 35 pounds. It is important to note that, since the size of a Pomsky can vary from pup to pup, there can be great variation between individual dogs in the size and weight categories. Different generations of the breed can also result in different sizes.
The amount of time you should walk your Pomsky depends on their age, overall health, and the amount of energy they have. As a general guideline, 10-20 minutes of combined exercise and playtime each day is recommended for adult Pomskies along with some short, frequent walks throughout the day. Puppies may need more, as 40-60 minutes per day of exercise is recommended for younger, growing dogs. If you find that your Pomsky is particularly energetic or playful, increasing their exercise time to between 30-45 minutes could be beneficial.
Pomskies can certainly get along with other pets in the home, as long as proper introductions and training are employed. Some Pomskies may take a bit longer to warm up to other animals as this breed has a tendency to be more wary of strangers. It is best to start out the introductions in a controlled environment and keep them closely supervised while they get to know each other. With slow introductions, patience, and consistent training, Pomskies can learn to be friendly with other pets, building life-long friendships.
Training your Pomsky can be a rewarding and fun experience! Before starting any kind of training, you should establish a bond with your pup by providing plenty of unconditional love and attention. Then prepare your environment so that it is distraction-free and comfortable. Having treats on-hand to reward good behaviors can be useful. Always start training with small sessions and keep each always short so your pup doesn’t get bored or frustrated. Use positive reinforcement to reward good behaviors. Make sure to be consistent and use the same training language each time.
