Questions & Answers
Poodles are a class of intelligent, active working dogs typically divided into three varieties; Standard, Miniature, and Toy. Though all of them share similar characteristics, such as being obedient, loyal, and very eager to please, the size and coat type can differ. Standard Poodles are the largest of the three, ranging in weight from 15 to 45 pounds or more, along with a profuse, curly to corded coat, while Miniature Poodles weigh 10-15 pounds with a relatively tame coat.
Poodles often get a reputation for being hypoallergenic due to their low-shedding coats, but true hypoallergenic breeds are highly dependent on the allergic person. Poodles are considered a low-dander and low-shedding breed, which is helpful to people with allergies, however all dogs, including Poodles, contain allergens that can cause allergic reactions in sensitive people. Additionally, even those breeds that barely shed have the ability to trigger an allergic reaction.
Poodles should not be fed foods high in fat and calories like meat, cheese, chocolate, candy, and ice cream because these items can lead to obesity and other health issues. Table scraps, rawhide, and bones can also cause problems as they can contain preservatives, additives, and even toxins that can harm a poodle's health. Small dogs such as poodles should also not be fed items designed for large dog breeds, as their digestive system is not equipped to handle it.
The best way to prepare for your new Poodle is to research the breed, and consider the needs of your particular pup. First, understand the breed traits of a Poodle; some may be active and need plenty of exercises while others prefer more cuddle time. Figure out the right diet for your Poodle – they generally need high-quality food – and decide how often they should be groomed. It's also important to establish basic commands such as 'sit', 'stay', and 'come' so that both you and your pup can benefit from having a well-behaved companion.
Poodles come in three distinct sizes; toy, miniature and standard. The Toy Poodle is the smallest of the three sizes and is usually around 10 inches long and no more than six pounds in weight. The Miniature Poodle is usually between 10 and 15 inches tall and weighs about 10 to 16 pounds. Standard Poodles are the largest of the three sizes and typically stand between 15 and 22 inches with a weight of about 40 to 65 pounds.
Poodles are not a particularly hyperactive breed of dog; however, they are still relatively active. They enjoy daily walks and enjoy playing fetch games. Poodles can also do well with agility and obedience training, which can help keep them physically and mentally active. They can also be taken on regular hikes or swimming. As poodles are very intelligent dogs, they do require mental stimulation, so it's important to keep them busy with interactive games or puzzle toys. Proper basic training and regular playtime can help to ensure they are getting the right amount of exercise and preventing boredom.
Poodles make great family dogs in many ways! Not only are they incredibly intelligent, loyal, and loving, but their coats require low-maintenance grooming. Due to these traits, poodles are an ideal family companion if you have kids or other animals. They are also small enough to not take up a lot of room and can fit into even small homes. Poodles, like other breeds, are capable of learning tricks quickly. This not only makes them a fun choice for families, but can even help teach children responsibility and patience when caring for their pet.
Training a Poodle requires both patience and consistency. The best way to begin is to start with basic commands such as; sit, stay, come and down. It's important to choose simple words that your Poodle can understand and also to give the command only once. Always reward your Poodle when they respond correctly with treats or praise, this will help reinforce the behavior you want. As your Poodle learns the basics, you can gradually increase the difficulty. Teaching them to shake, roll over, speak or even to fetch will require more practice.
