Questions & Answers
Poodles are known as one of the most intelligent and loyal of dog breeds, but one of the most interesting things about them is their colorful history. In the 1600s, the French began to treat them as a luxury item, giving rise to their iconic scissor-cut coat. For much of history, they were well-known for their role in aquatic sports, such as duck-hunting and retrieval. Even today, they remain celebrated for their amazing swimming capabilities.
Poodles are known to be a low-shedding breed of dog, or non-shedding, depending on what type of coat they have been bred to have. These dogs have a similar coat to human hair, making it more resistant to shedding and helping them stay clean. Though the standard Poodle is more prone to shedding, the Miniature and Toy Poodles lack the protective undercoat, so they are less likely to shed.
Poodles should not be given any human food like chocolate, onions, grapes, and raisins, as these can cause serious health problems. Additionally, food items like pork, bread dough, raw meat, and yeast dough should be avoided in order to prevent bloat and other digestive illnesses. Any bones, as well as rawhide, dentals sticks or toys, are a choking hazard and should also be avoided.
Poodle require certain amounts of exercise in order to stay healthy; this can be accomplished with frequent walks and play-time. They should also have access to clean, fresh water at all times, to prevent dehydration. Furthermore, Poodle may require certain types of grooming depending on their breed and coat type. Daily brushing is recommended to prevent excessive shedding, and regular trims will need to be performed every few months. Additionally, veterinarians recommend feeding high-quality, grain-free meals that are specific to a dog's size.
Poodles are considered a medium-sized breed, and the height of an adult can range from around 10 inches (25 cm) to a tall height of more than 15 inches (38 cm). The typical weight of an adult Poodle typically falls within the range of 10 to 70 pounds (4-32 kg) depending on the variety (i.e., toy, miniature, or standard).
The amount of time you need to walk your Poodle every day really depends on your individual pup's specific activity level and energy levels. That said, for an average healthy Poodle, it's recommended that they get at least 30-60 minutes of brisk exercise/walking per day, split into two or more separate sessions. If they seem energetic and interested in playing or going for a walk, you can extend the total amount of time up to 90 minutes or more.
Generally, Poodles are very family-oriented and socialized with children since they were puppies. They are known for their intelligence and are eager to learn. Children naturally generate the energy and sound of positive interaction and play that a Poodle will enjoy. As long as both the young ones and the Poodle are properly trained and supervised, they should have a strong, positive bond. It is important to remember that each Poodle is an individual, and may show different levels of tolerance and attachment towards young ones with varying personalities.
Training Poodles requires patience and consistency. How much time you need to dedicate depends on your individual goals and the age and skill level of your Poodle. Generally, experts recommend dedicating at least 15 minutes per day to training, with the goal of building up that time to at least 30 minutes as the dog develops greater skills and obedience. To reach the highest levels of performance, such as those demanded of show dogs, owners should expect to commit a minimum of 45 minutes to one hour daily.
