Poodles are an incredibly intelligent and trainable breed of dog, known for their signature curly fur coat and aristocratic bearing. They come in three sizes: Standard (15-24 inches tall at the shoulder), Miniature (under 15 inches tall at the shoulder) and Toy (under 10 inches tall). Despite their aloof demeanor, Poodles are highly social and energetic dogs that require regular exercise and companionship. Their fur coats require regular brushing and grooming, although there is a wide variety of coat styles to choose from.
Contrary to popular belief, Poodles do not naturally shed and do require frequent grooming. While the amount and frequency of shedding may vary from one Poodle to the next, the shedding process typically is managed by regular brushing and maintenance of the coat. The fluffy coat that gives Poodles their signature look is actually an adaptation from less dense fur, which helps to reduce the amount of shedding that happens naturally. This makes the Poodle a great companion for those who may suffer from allergies or are looking for a low-shedding option.
Poodles should not be fed foods that are high in fat, such as bacon, or foods with high sodium contents, which can cause adverse health conditions. Additionally, human foods such as chocolate, cheese, nuts, and eggs can be hazardous to a Poodle's health due to their inability to digest some of the components in these foods.
Before buying a Poodle, it's essential to equip yourself with all the necessary items. Especially if it's your first time owning a pet. Having a few basic items is a must and will make life easier for both you and your pup: a collar, leash and harness, identification tags, food and water bowls, puppy shampoo and a brush, high-quality dog food, toys, and comfortable bedding. You should also get a comfortable yet durable crate for sleeping or traveling.
Poodles are considered to be medium-sized dogs, with the average height ranging from 10 to 15 inches and the average weight for full-grown Poodles coming in at around 10 to 70 pounds. Generally speaking, Standards tend to be around 15 inches tall and can weigh up to 45-70 pounds; Miniatures tend to be around 10 inches tall and their weight range is around 10 to 15 pounds; and Toy Poodles are usually between 4 and 6 inches tall and can weigh up to 6-9 pounds.
The amount of exercise your Poodle should receive will depend on your pet's age, breed, and current health status. Generally, puppies will need more exercise than an older, more sedentary dog. As such, a good rule of thumb is to allow at least 30 minutes of activity per day. This could be broken up into two or three 10-minute walks, or whatever works best for you and your canine companion. However, an active, young Poodle will likely benefit from greater exercise levels ideally at least an hour per day that is divided up into multiple shorter walks.
