Questions & Answers
Poodles are a beloved breed of dog known for their intelligence, regal appearance, and hypoallergenic coat. Generally, Poodles come in three sizes, standard, miniature, and toy (these are determined by height). For those who wish to have a Poodle as a pet, they should be aware that these agile creatures require regular exercise and mental stimulation to remain healthy and active. Although Poodles are intelligent enough to be trained to do many tricks, they are also prone to becoming bored if they do not receive enough physical and mental stimulation.
Poodles, among other breeds, have typically been labeled as hypoallergenic pets with the ability to not trigger common pet allergies such as sneezing or watery eyes. This label is often attributed to their low levels of shedding and having less dander than other breeds of dog. While it's true that a poodle's fur doesn't shed or shed very little, this doesn't necessarily mean it's completely hypoallergenic as it still produces allergens.
Poodles should not be fed table scraps, processed human food, or anything containing raw bones. Instead, pet parents should provide balanced, nutrient-rich meals that are specifically designed for their pooch's breed. If you feed your Poodle a homemade diet, it's important to check with your veterinarian to be sure it is nutritionally complete. Poodles should also avoid highly salty, sugary, and high-fat foods, as well as chocolate, alcoholic beverages, grapes, onions, garlic, and macadamia nuts, all of which can be toxic.
Before getting a Poodle, you should make sure you have a few essentials on hand. Most importantly, you'll need food and treats formulated for the specific size and age of your dog. You'll also want to purchase an appropriate-sized collar, a leash, and plenty of chew toys. A dog bed is also important to give your pup a comfortable place to relax. Don't forget a brush for grooming and regular external parasite control products like flea and tick medication. Additionally, if you plan to do any level of training, you'll want to get treats you can use for positive reinforcement.
Poodles come in three sizes Standard, Miniature, and Toy. Standard Poodles generally weigh between 45 to 70 pounds and are considered to be between 15 to 22 inches tall. A Miniature Poodle typically weighs 15 to 17 pounds and is 10 to 15 inches tall. The smallest of the Poodles is the Toy, which typically weigh no more than 6 to 9 pounds and stand no taller than 10 inches. However, the size of the breed may vary depending on the breeder or specific puppy.
The amount of walking you should do each day with your Poodle will vary based on its age and activity level. Generally, it's recommended to do at least 30 minutes of walking per day in two 15-minute sessions. For puppies younger than a year and older dogs with arthritis or other joint problems, five to 10 minutes may be enough. As a rule of thumb, the more active your pup is, the more exercise it will need. Consider adding in an additional 10 minutes for each extra month of age the Poodle has.
Poodles can most certainly make great family dogs! Known for being loyal companions, they can often be very loving and affectionate around kids. With a bright and intuitive nature, poodles are a highly trainable breed and with some proper socialization they can learn how to behave properly around a family. They also have an acclaimed fluffy coat which makes them a great companion for cuddles.
Poodles are widely known for their intelligence and intuitive problem-solving abilities. It is believed that these strong-minded pooches rank among the most intelligent breeds of dogs--with many owners lending credit to this particular breed as helping to reduce stress, providing companionship, or even actively learning a wide variety of activities and commands. They are highly intelligent animals and are often ranked among the smartest breeds. And with their high emotional intelligence, they make great family pets, a wonderful choice for owners still learning the ropes of having a new pup.
