Questions & Answers
Poodles are an active breed of dog and are actually a great choice for people who love to run and spend a lot of time outdoors. Known for their intelligence, poodles are great problem-solvers and often excel in obedience and agility activities. With their hypoallergenic fur, poodles don't shed much and make good pets for people with allergies. A fun fact about poodles is that the name actually comes from the German word “pudel”, meaning “one who plays in the water”.
Though many owners perceive Poodles to be non-shedding or hypoallergenic, they are not technically non-shedding. All breeds of dogs shed, but Poodles have hair rather than fur and tend to shed less than other breeds. They don’t lack the gene that triggers regular shedding like other breeds. This makes them easier for people with allergies to manage. Additionally, since Poodles require regular grooming, there is opportunity for the groomer to remove loose hair.
Poodles are considered to be relatively easy to feed, and they require a balanced diet comprised of quality food. Generally speaking, a Poodle's diet should include both dry kibble and canned food supplemented by a variety of wholesome snacks. Additional options could include natural dog treats, raw foods (such as fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins), and commercially-prepared freeze-dried treats. All foods should be in line with the guidelines of the Association of American Feed Control Officials, as well as any supplements or vitamins that are recommended by the Poodle's veterinarian.
Preparing your home for a new Poodle can be an exciting and rewarding experience. One of the first steps for getting ready is to puppy-proof your house by making sure hazardous and easily-reachable items such as medication, cleaning products and electric cords are kept out of reach or at the very least properly stored so your pup won't get into them. Next, you should purchase all the essential items you'll need such as puppy-safe food, crates and bedding, plus toys and chew-sticks.
Poodles come in three sizes Standard, Miniature, and Toy and the size of the breed depends largely on the size of its parents. Generally, Standard Poodles can grow to around 15 inches in height and weigh up to 70 pounds; Miniature Poodles usually reach heights of up to 14 inches and range between 6 10 pounds in weight; Toy Poodles are the littlest of the three, typically getting to heights of 10 11 inches and typically weighing in at 6 9 pounds.
Certainly, it's generally safe to take your Poodle running, as long as you take some precautions. Make sure you know your Poodle's exercise limits; avoid taking them running in hot weather or on surfaces that will be too difficult for their little paws, and bear in mind that they aren't built to run long distances. Be sure to keep an eye on their breathing, and give them frequent breaks if needed.
Poodles can get along with other pets if they are properly introduced. Socializing a Poodle puppy from a young age is key, as they can learn to be comfortable with other animals and understand that they are not a threat. It is best to introduce a Poodle slowly and let the pets cautiously get to know each other to create a safe and successful relationship. Additionally, providing a Poodle with plenty of mental and physical stimulation such as providing toys, going on regular walks, and offering interaction with humans will help maintain a Poodle's well-being.
The amount of time needed to train a Poodle each day will vary depending on its age, breed, individual temperament and the desired goals of the training. Generally speaking, Poodles will benefit the most from half an hour to one hour of training each day. If the desired goal is to train it to compete in obedience trials or other events, then a longer amount of time should be dedicated to training each day.
