Questions & Answers
Poodles are one of the oldest breeds of dogs and were originally bred to be water retrievers. They come in three sizes, Standard, Miniature, and Toy, with the Standard Poodle being the original breed. Poodles have a lifespan of 10-18 years, and are known for their intelligence, even ranking 2nd in Stanley Coren's The Intelligence of Dogs. Poodles' coats don't shed, meaning they don't produce dander, but they do need regular grooming, including clipping and brushing.
Poodles are often believed to be hypoallergenic due to their non-shedding coats, however, no dog (or any other pet) is truly hypoallergenic. Allergy-prone individuals may still suffer allergic reactions when exposed to Poodles, as the protein found in the pet’s saliva, urine and dander can cause an allergic reaction. Some may consider Poodles hypoallergenic, as they tend to produce less dander and saliva than other breeds, which might make allergic reactions less severe.
Poodles are known for their intelligence, loyalty, and hypoallergenic coats, but they also need a nutritious diet in order to maintain their health. As primarily omnivores, poodles need a balanced diet of proteins, carbohydrates, and healthy fats. This can be achieved with a combination of commercially available high-quality kibble and fresh ingredients such as lean meats, fruits, vegetables, and dairy (think yogurt or cottage cheese!). It's important to avoid table scraps and other human food that may contain harmful ingredients.
Preparing your home for your new Poodle should be both fun and functional. Start by purchasing all the necessary items like a food and water bowl, bed, leash and collar, comb, brush, shampoo and any special chew toys he may need. Next, puppy-proof your home by blocking access to any potentially dangerous areas by either closing access doors or blocking off staircases or other troublesome areas. Move any fragile items or low furniture to another room or higher location, and be sure to identify hazardous plants in case your pup decides to investigate.
Generally, Poodles have traditionally been classified as a small breed of dog. While their exact size varies based on the breed, however, they usually range from 8 to 15 inches tall and can weigh anywhere from 4 to 75 pounds. Generally, even the larger varieties of Poodle stay relatively small, and are known as a compact yet agile breed. They have a non-shedding coat that requires regular clipping, brushing, and grooming. This makes them a great companion for those who have allergies, as well as the perfect small family dog.
The amount of exercise that you should provide your Poodle depends on a variety of factors such as age, overall health, and existing activity level. Generally, an adult Poodle should get at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day. If your Poodle is young, especially during the puppy stage, it may be necessary to increase exercise to an hour or more each day. This should be divided up throughout the day, so walking for at least 10-15 minutes multiple times a day should keep your Poodle healthy and happy.
Poodles are highly intelligent, loving dogs that make great family pets. Their size makes them relatively easy to care for and ideal for both smaller homes as well as larger homes since they only require moderate exercise. What's more, Poodles are prone to very little shedding which makes them suitable for people who suffer from allergies. Additionally, Poodles are very social and thrive in the presence of family members. They also pick up on cues quickly, making them relatively easy to train.
There is no definitive answer to this question as it will depend on each individual poodle and their individual needs. However, as a general guideline, it is recommended that poodles receive at least 20 minutes of exercise and stimulation each day, with walks and active playtime. This should be adjusted if the poodle is younger or older and may need more frequent or less frequent activity, respectively. Additionally, it is important to factor in training during this time.
