Questions & Answers
Poodles are a highly intelligent and popular breed, often known for their signature curly fur and prancing gait. Interestingly, Poodles originally served as water retrievers, and were used by hunters to help find ducks and other waterfowl. Their thick, curly fur actually served as a built-in water-resistant coat, which kept them warm and dry during long swims. Poodles come in three size varieties standard, miniature, and toy. The taller sizes typically weigh anywhere from 40 to 75 pounds, while the miniature variety typically ranges from 15 to 20 pounds.
While Poodles are considered hypoallergenic, this does not guarantee that you will not develop an allergy. Every individual has their own unique allergies, so it is impossible to predict how you might react. Ultimately, it will come down to trying out a Poodle and seeing how your body responds. If you or someone in your family are sensitive to pet dander, then you might want to consider giving the breed a try in a controlled setting, such as a professional breeder or breeder whose reputation has been established.
Poodles are intelligent, sensitive and active dogs that require a healthy and balanced diet. Their meals should include protein and carbohydrates, as well as vitamins, minerals and fiber. This can be achieved by providing your Poodle with a combination of dry dog food and treats, wet food, and healthy homemade meals. Dry food should be the foundation of your Poodle’s diet, and should be free from artificial colors, flavors, preservatives and sugar. Wet and/or homemade foods should be added to their diet for extra nutrition and variety.
Poodles certainly have some special requirements to ensure their health and well-being. These include brushing their coat regularly to keep their hair in the best condition possible, bathing at least once a month to keep their fur clean and healthy, and trimming their nails to help keep their paws in proper condition. Additionally, Poodles need plenty of exercise to remain healthy and well-behaved, with an ideal range of activity being a combination of walks and some form of activity that keeps them mentally stimulated.
Poodles come in four distinct sizes: Toy, Miniature, Standard, and Giant. Toy Poodles are the smallest, usually weighing no more than 10 pounds and standing 8 inches tall at the shoulder, while the tallest of the bunch, the Giants, tend to reach heights of 18-24 inches and weigh between 40-85 pounds. Miniature Poodles, which are bred between Toy and Standard Poodles, typically stand between 11-16 inches tall and weigh between 11-16 pounds.
A general recommendation for a healthy adult Poodle is 30 minutes of active exercise a day. Depending on the age and fitness level of your Poodle, you may need to adjust this amount. Walking your Poodle for at least 20 minutes a day can provide mental and physical stimulation while also helping to reduce destructive behaviors like barking and chewing. Keep in mind that the more exercise your Poodle gets, the healthier and better behaved they will be.
Poodles are an active and intelligent breed of dog that make great family dogs. They are a playful and loyal companion, often forming strong bonds with their owners and getting along well with children. Their low-shedding coat is also great for those who suffer from allergies. As an added bonus, their highly trainable nature can make it easier for them to learn simple commands. Poodles' high intelligence and eagerness to please makes them highly adaptable, whether they are in a house with several other pets or living with just a couple of people.
Training a Poodle is an enjoyable experience that does not require too much effort if addressed in the right manner. Every dog is unique and Poodles tend to pick up on tasks a little quicker than other breeds thanks to their intelligence. Taking your time to introduce basic commands and developing them in a positive environment is key for successful training. Proper socialization with people and other animals will also be beneficial in helping you create a canine companion with optimal behavior.
