Questions & Answers
A Poodle is a type of dog known for their intelligence and fancy haircuts! Poodles come in three sizes -standards, miniature, and toy. Traditionally, they have an easily recognizable curly coat, which has helped them become arguably the most popular breed in the world. Poodles are easily trainable and have a playful disposition, making them great companions and family pets. They are also prized for their agility and, as such, often perform in circuses and compete in dog sports.
Poodle coats are unique in both texture and color. They have a tight, curly coat that is finer than most other breeds of dog. The unique texture makes the coat require brushing and trimming regularly. The colors for Poodle coats vary, with solid colors such as white, black, and tan being the most popular. Poodles may also have combinations of two or more colors, such as brown, black, and white, or tan and apricot.
Poodles tend to be active and have a delicate digestive system, so the best dog food to feed them is one that is designed specifically for these particular traits. The ideal Poodle food should be made up of high-quality animal-based proteins, moderate fats, complex carbohydrates, and a variety of fruits and vegetables. Not only will this provide the necessary nutrition for a healthy pet, but it will also help keep them lean and muscle-toned.
To make sure your home is fully prepared to welcome your new Poodle, there are a few things to consider. First, you should make sure your home is puppy-proofed; any items that could pose a hazard to your pup should be put away. Additionally, be sure to create a safe, comfortable environment for your pup with plenty of comfortable places to sleep, plenty of toys, and set designated areas for eating and going to the bathroom. Also, be sure not to overcrowd your house and provide plenty of fresh water, as well as healthy, nutritious food.
The eventual size of a Poodle puppy is largely determined by its parents. In general, Poodles come in three different sizes--Toy, Miniature, and Standard. Typically, Toy Poodles are 8-10 inches in height at the shoulders, Miniature Poodles are 11-15 inches in height, and Standard Poodles are 15-22 inches in height. It's best to contact your breeder prior to the arrival of your puppy so that you can get a better idea of what size to expect.
Poodles have a natural instinct for swimming and they generally enjoy it a lot! In fact, they are natural swimmers and their thick, curly coat serves as insulation and keeps them warm while swimming. Not only that, but their webbed feet and light, compact bodies are well-suited for swimming. While some Poodles may not like to swim initially, with a little patience and encouragement they will usually learn to enjoy it sometimes even faster than expected. Swimming is a great way for Poodles to get exercise and mental stimulation, as well.
Poodles make excellent family dogs due to their friendly personalities and willingness to please. They are incredibly intelligent and can be easily trained, making them great candidates for families of all skill levels. Poodles are known to be great with children, as they enjoy playing and interacting with the whole family. As well as being loyal family members, they are highly adaptable and get along with other animals, including cats. They can be quite rambunctious at times, but they usually settle down when given proper guidance and positive reinforcement.
Training your Poodle requires patience and consistency. Start by establishing expectations for your Poodle in terms of behavior, and provide plenty of positive reinforcement for desired behaviors. Practice short, positive training sessions during which you introduce commands such as “Sit", “Stay", and “Come” and reward your Poodle with positive reinforcement such as treats, praise and cuddles when he follows those commands. Use a combination of positive reinforcement and reprimands for undesired behaviors, and above all, be consistent.
