Questions & Answers
Poodles are among the oldest known breeds around, with evidence suggesting they have been around since the 15th century. They were bred originally to be retrievers and water dogs, and they are known to be incredibly intelligent, ranking second in Stanley Coren's Intelligence of Dogs scale. They come in different sizes; standard, miniature, and toy. They are also known for their hypoallergenic coat, which can be kept very long or short with standard grooming.
Managing allergies with Poodles is possible due to their low to non-shedding coats. To help reduce any allergic reactions, brush your Poodle consistently and bathe them weekly (or more frequently, if needed). Regularly clean materials or objects in your home (bedding, couch, etc.) that your Poodle commonly comes in contact with. Also, always ensure you have a high-quality hypoallergenic air filter in your home and consider using synthetic air fresheners.
Poodles are intelligent, active dogs who require a balanced diet for optimal health and wellbeing. A good diet for a Poodle should include high-quality dog food specifically formulated for their size and age. The food should be easily digestible and nutritionally balanced. Some veterinarians suggest a food divided into two or three small meals throughout the day, as this helps reduce the chances of overeating and helps regulate the intake of excessive and unnecessary calories. In addition to high-quality kibble, you can supplement your Poodle's diet with canned food or freshly made meals.
Becoming the best puppy parent for your Poodle requires complete dedication and commitment. Start by educating yourself on the breed’s traits and characteristics. Doing so will help you better understand the needs of your Poodle and provide them the care they need, establishing a strong bond between the two of you. Provide exercise and stimulation to keep them engaged and happy. Spend quality time with your puppy playing, teaching them manners, going for walks, or visiting the park. Be sure to also provide a consistent routine with set meal times, potty breaks, and loving but firm rules.
Poodles come in three sizes: Standard, Miniature, and Toy size. Standard Poodles are the largest variety and are usually over 15 inches at the shoulder and can weigh up to 70+ pounds. The Miniature Poodle is usually between 11 and 15 inches and weigh 12-20 pounds. The Toy Poodle usually have a height of 10 inches and less and weigh up to 10 pounds.
Poodles love to swim and do so quite naturally! Thanks to their webbed feet, buoyant coat, and lack of joint issues, these dogs are natural swimmers. In addition to swimming, Poodles enjoy running alongside boats or chasing toys through the water. Moreover, they have no problem with cold weather, so they can swim in winter a bonus for those living in cool climates. Not to be forgotten are the mental benefits swimming provides. Swimming for a Poodle can be an invigorating way to keep their brain exercised.
Poodles have generally been known to be friendly and get along well with other family pets. The breed's even-tempered and non-aggressive nature means they often make fast friends with cats, birds, and other animals. That said, each dog is an individual and may take some time to properly feel comfortable and familiar with other animals living in the same space. If introducing a new pet, it should be done slowly, with plenty of opportunities for supervised socialization and using treats to create positive associations.
The amount of time you need to dedicate to training your Poodle on a daily basis will depend on the age and experience of the dog. For puppies and inexperienced dogs, it's important to set aside some time each day to begin training. Keeping the sessions short and focused (usually 10-15 minutes per day) is usually enough to start. As your dog learns new skills, you can increase the frequency and intensity of the training as needed. If you're looking to get more out of your Poodle, 10-20 minutes per day is generally recommended.
