Questions & Answers
Poodles are a highly intelligent, active and sociable breed that belongs to the non-sporting group. Poodles are of three sizes standard, miniature and toy and can be differentiated by stature and coat type. The coat types consist of corded, curly, and shaved. All three sizes of poodles share the same alert, graceful expression and demeanor, and require strict grooming regiments to maintain their signature look. Poodles are people oriented and enjoy being surrounded by their family and friends.
Due to their curly coats, Poodles generally don't shed and are among the breeds commonly referred to as hypoallergenic. This means that some people who have allergies to a particular protein found in pet saliva or dander may suffer fewer symptoms with a Poodle (or any hypoallergenic breed) as compared to other breeds. However, it is important to note that there is no guarantee a Poodle won't cause allergic reactions since some allergies may be caused by different proteins than the ones found in saliva or dander.
Poodles can be a picky eater but it's important to feed them nutritious and well-balanced food. It's recommended that you purchase a high-quality commercially available dog food that states it's formulated specifically for poodles or high-energy breeds on the label. If you choose to feed your poodle a homemade diet, make sure it meets the nutrient requirements established by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO). This may require the help of a veterinarian nutritionist or other expert in the field.
Preparing for your new Poodle can be an exciting process, but it is important to ensure that you are adequately ready. First, familiarize yourself with the basic needs of the breed, such as potential health issues, dietary requirements, and necessary grooming. Secondly, look into the different breeds and sizes to determine what is best for you and your lifestyle. Finally, make sure to create an environment that is conducive to your pup's growth and development. This means having the necessary supplies like a bed, food, toys, and a secure place to exercise.
Generally, a Poodle puppy will grow to about 10-15 inches in height when fully grown. Size is mostly determined by the Poodle's parent breeds -Toy, Miniature, and Standard Poodle puppies -so you may be able to get a better estimate of your puppy's future size by looking at the size of the pup's parents. As a general guideline, a Toy Poodle will typically weigh 4-6 lbs; Miniature Poodles, 15-17 lbs; and Standard Poodles, 45-70 lbs.
Poodles are certainly active dogs. They enjoy plenty of physical activity such as long walks, playing in yards, and engaging in agility or obedience exercises. Poodles are very intelligent and eager to please—these two qualities make them especially well-suited for activities that require a lot of mental stimulation as well as physical exercise. With proper attention and daily exercise, you can ensure that your poodle is getting plenty of activity, keeping their bodies and minds healthy and happy.
Poodles can make a wonderful companion for first-time owners. Contrary to popular belief, they are not just for show, but can also be great family pets! Poodles are intelligent, easily trainable, and loyal members of the family all qualities that make them ideal for novice owners. They have low to moderate exercise needs, including indoor and outdoor activities, walks, and games. These pooches excel in obedience and agility classes, and come in a variety of sizes and coat colors. They have minimal shedding, meaning they require far less grooming than other breeds.
Training a Poodle requires patience and consistency. Generally, the best way to train a Poodle is to use positive reinforcement to reward good behavior. First, decide what you would like to train your Poodle to do, such as basic commands such as "sit" and "stay". Next, think of a reward to give the Poodle when they obey the command, such as a small treat or a toy. Whenever the Poodle obeys the command promptly, have them perform the action again and then reward it.
