Questions & Answers
Poodles are considered one of the most intelligent and trainable of all dog breeds, making them a great companion for a variety of people. They come in three different sizes Toy, Miniature, and Standard and are usually either a solid color or parti-color. The most common solid colors are black, white, apricot, and gray. Poodles are surprisingly active and interactive, and need regular exercise to stay healthy and happy. They must also be groomed regularly to prevent their fur from becoming matted or tangled.
The good news is that Poodles are usually considered to be among the most hypoallergenic of all dog breeds. While no breed of dog can guarantee that allergies won't occur, Poodles are traditionally thought to be among the least likely to cause allergies due to their curly coats, which can trap dander less than the traditional breeds. However, it is possible to still be allergic even to a hypoallergenic breed, so if you have allergies, it's best to spend at least some time in the presence of the Poodle before committing to one.
Poodles have a fairly omnivorous diet. Their diet should consist of high-quality commercial dog food, but they can also have grilled chicken, fish, vegetables, and fruits. For treats, small amounts of unsalted rice cakes, carrots, green beans, apples, and cooked eggs are all healthy, safe choices. Generally, poodles should not be given processed, pre-packaged treats as these can contain unhealthy fillers and preservatives.
Preparing your home for a new Poodle starts with ensuring the safety and comfort of your furry friend. To ensure your pup's safety, create a designated puppy-proofed area. You will want to remove any items that may be hazardous or could be chewed, such as plants, electrical cords, and chemicals. Make sure any windows or balconies are securely closed or gated, and that your trash and garbage cans are also secured. Additionally, buy the necessary supplies specific for the breed of Poodle you have, such as grooming products and proper bedding.
Poodles are definitely considered small dogs! According to the American Kennel Club, the standard size Poodle is typically 15 inches tall at the shoulder and weighs around 40-70 pounds. This puts them in the small dog breed category, which is generally considered to be any dog 15 inches or shorter in height. Miniature Poodles on the other hand are between 11-15 inches tall and weigh between 10-15 pounds. Meanwhile, the Toy Poodle size group typically consists of dogs nine inches and under, and weighs four to six pounds.
Poodles absolutely love to swim! It's a great way for them to be active and to cool off in the summer months. Poodles are known to be great swimmers, their coats are water-resistant and their webbed feet help them propel themselves quickly and gracefully through the water. They adapt very well to swimming, and some can even dive! Swimming not only keeps your poodle healthy and active, but is also useful in helping to socialize them with other animals and people.
Poodles can make great companions for first-time dog owners. Poodles are intelligent and easy to train, known for being creative and eager to please. They are also one of the least-allergenic breeds, so allergies are less likely to be a problem for many owners. Poodles are loyal and devoted to their owners, forming extremely strong bonds with their people. As an active breed, they need plenty of physical and mental exercise, so it is important that first-time owners are up for providing adequate playtime, walks, and tasks.
Poodles are undeniably some of the smartest dogs out there. Known for their razor-sharp intelligence, they have continuously been used as working or performing dogs. They are intuitive and can be trained to learn things quickly, making them some of the most tractable breeds to teach tricks and commands. Their excellent memory also helps make them more agile compared to other breeds. Poodles also have an impressive ability to remember tasks and can even be trained for advanced work, such as in search and rescue.
