Questions & Answers
Poodles are an incredibly fascinating breed of dog. For one, they come in three sizes Standard, Miniature, and Toy and in a host of colors, from apricot to silver. Additionally, their signature clip is more than just for looks; it was designed to help them move more easily through the water when the breed was used for hunting. Additionally, their thick, double coat serves as an insulator, which is useful for working and show dogs, especially since they compete best in between-room temperatures.
Poodles are widely known for their minimal shedding. This is because, unlike other dogs, a Poodle's coat is light and fluffy which helps prevent matting or tangles, and the structure of the hair follicle makes it easier to keep from releasing dander and shedding. While there is still some shedding with a Poodle, it is minimal compared to other breeds. Additionally, Poodles come in a variety of colors and sizes making them a great choice for allergy suffers who need a non-shedding breed. The type of coat they have also offers good protection against cold climates.
Poodles shouldn't eat foods that are high in fat or sugar, as this can lead to health issues, such as obesity and diabetes. It's best to stick to foods specifically designed for Poodles. Uncooked or odd-textured foods can also cause stomach or intestinal upset, so these should be avoided as well. People food, such as grapes, avocados, onions, garlic, and tomato plants, can be harmful to a Poodle. Chocolate, caffeine, and alcohol are dangerous and should not be given under any circumstance.
Before bringing your Poodle home, you should make sure to prepare your home to ensure that your pup has a safe and comfortable living environment. You'll want to puppy-proof your home by moving hazardous household items such as breakables, small objects, and electrical cords to higher, out-of-reach places. Choose a family room or other area for your pup where they can play, eat, and sleep; also make sure the room has easy-to-clean surfaces. You'll want to get the right toys, chew bones, food, and bedding for your new pup as well.
Poodles come in a variety of sizes, though all varieties are considered a single breed. Standard Poodles are the largest size, with males typically reaching a height of 18-24 inches and weighing between 40 and 70 pounds. Miniature Poodles Top out at 10-15 inches and weigh between 10 and 15 pounds, while Toy Poodles are the smallest of the bunch – typically reaching a height of under 10 inches and weighing approximately 6 to 9 pounds.
Poodle breeds are highly active, playful, and intelligent pups! Because of these characteristics, they require a good amount of regular exercise and mental stimulation. To properly care for a Poodle, experts recommend at least 30 minutes of exercise a day, though an hour of activity would be ideal. This should include walking, running, swimming, scent training, obedience training, play dates, and interactive toys. Exercise stimulates your Poodle's mind and helps them feel content and focused. Poodles can become easily bored, however, so be sure to vary their exercise routine to keep it interesting!
Poodles make fantastic family dogs because of their intelligence and their adaptability to different types of family lifestyles. They are incredibly versatile and can fit right in with any family. Poodles are known for their willingness to please and for being extremely loyal family pets. In addition to being loyal, they are also independent, affectionate, and loving. Poodles are also pretty low maintenance when it comes to grooming as they require regular brushing and monthly trips to the groomer for a trim. All of these amazing qualities make Poodles the perfect family dog!
Properly training a Poodle involves patience, consistency, and plenty of positive reinforcement. It's important to start your Poodle's training as a puppy so they can adjust quickly and become obedient. As they get older, dedicating a few minutes each day to teaching basic commands like sit, come, stay, and leave it can help create a solid foundation in which you can build upon. Additionally, providing regular exercise, mainly in the form of walks and other outdoor activities, can reduce the amount of behavioral issues you might experience.
