Poodles are an exemplary breed of dog due to their high level of intelligence, grace, and poise. One especially interesting thing about this breed is how the styling of their famous ‘poodle clip’ has been around since 400BC and enjoyed by many different cultures throughout history. Since then, their signature style has only grown in popularity and thrived within different classes and countries. Their intelligence also allows them to be easily trained by their owners, making them the ideal companions in a variety of settings.
Poodles have coats that vary between three types the smooth, the corded and the curly. The smooth coat, which is the most popular, is soft and dense. It looks like a sheepskin, with dense hair that rarely reaches more than two inches in length. Meanwhile, the corded coat has tight, thick curls that are even throughout the body. It can reach up to six inches in length if not regularly groomed. Lastly, the curly coat has soft curls that form tight, organized waves.
Poodles are generally very smart and active dogs, and require a special diet and nutrition plan to remain healthy. In general, they should not be given food that is high in fat or sugar content, as it can be bad for their digestive system. Toy Poodles are between 6-10 inches tall and weigh 4-6 pounds and Teacup Poodles stand less than 6 inches tall and weigh between 2-4 pounds.
How much exercise a Poodle needs will depend on your pet's age, size, and health, so it's best to consult your veterinarian about the specific amount of walking necessary for your pup. Generally speaking, a Poodle should get at least 20 minutes of walking, jogging, or light activity per day. However, older or smaller dogs may do better with 10 to 15 minutes of walking or light activity and several potty-breaks throughout the day. At the very least, you should give your Poodle 10 to 15 minutes of walking time and at least one bathroom break every day.
