Questions & Answers
Poodles are an incredibly unique breed of dog, and the most interesting aspect of them is their incredible intelligence and loyalty. They are often referred to as a “person’s best friend” due to their eagerness to please and kindhearted nature. They require a lot of training and socialization but once that is accomplished, they are incredibly smart. Many poodles excel at a wide range of activities such as obedience training, competitive agility, weight pulling, field training, and and retrieving.
Managing allergies with Poodles is possible due to their low-shedding coats. The best way to maximize allergen control when owning a Poodle is to commit to regular brushing and grooming. Brushing removes loose hair, and stimulates the production of natural oils to keep the coat shiny and healthy. However, even with regular brushing and grooming, it is important to also bathe and shampoo your Poodle regularly. This helps to reduce dander buildup, which is what can cause allergies in some owners.
Poodles are a type of toy dog breed that requires high-quality, nutritious food in order to have a healthy, happy life. When it comes to feeding your Poodle, look for dog food that is formulated for small breed dogs, contains high-quality proteins, fats and carbohydrates, and provides a range of vitamins and minerals. You may also give your Poodle human food as part of a balanced diet, such as steamed veggies, poultry or fish cooked with no salt or fat, and some plain whole grains.
Before bringing your new Poodle home, it's important to ensure that your home is safe and conducive for it to live in. This includes creating a comfortable area for your pup to sleep, such as a crate or puppy bed, as well as designating other areas for food and water bowls, toys, and a potty area. Keep your Poodle away from any hazardous areas like the kitchen or laundry room, making sure all floors are free from broken glass or small objects that can hurt them.
The size of your puppy depends on the age, breed, and particular dog. Generally, Poodle puppies will grow to approximatley 10-15 inches high at the shoulder and weigh 10-18 pounds when fully grown. Since size is determined by a lot of factors, the shape and size of your puppy could vary a little from those numbers. However, this is the range for the breed standard size of a Poodle. The only way to know exactly how big your puppy will be when fully grown is to monitor their size and growth as they mature.
Absolutely! Poodles are incredibly active dogs that love to be on the move. They need plenty of daily exercise, playtime, and mental stimulation. They also love to interact with people and make excellent companions for walks, runs, hikes, or just enjoying time in the park. While some Poodles may be a bit more laid-back, they still prefer regular activity and require lots of physical and mental engagement to stay healthy and happy.
Poodles can make great companions for families with kids due to their friendly and intelligent nature. They are known to have a great capacity to love and bond with family members, including children, making them an ideal pet for children. Poodles will need to be socialized as early as possible with both humans and other animals to be comfortable in any situation, but when they are given the opportunity to form strong, loving bonds they make excellent playmates for children.
Training your Poodle should begin as soon as you bring them home. Socialization and consistent structure are key. Great non-food rewards such as praise, petting or playtime should be used to reinforce desired behavior. Teaching your Poodle basic commands first such as sit, stay, come, and leave it will help in other specific training sessions. Gently offer corrections to unwanted behavior. Repetition is essential. Break up training sessions into short periods to help maintain your pup's attention span. Praise your pup for desirable behaviors and provide gentle guidance when needed showing patience and consistency.
