Questions & Answers
Poodles are highly intelligent and easily trainable breeds of dogs that have been a favorite pet for centuries. With their puffy hair and graceful mannerisms, they are as beloved for their looks as much as their easy going temperament. They have a strong prey drive, so an enclosed area or supervision is advised when they are outside. Poodles are great jumpers so high fences are a must if you want to keep them contained and safe.
Poodles are certainly known to be a breed of dog that is non-shedding. They do not have an undercoat, so their coats are hypoallergenic and tend to be wiry. This means they do not shed as traditional dog breeds, and any hairs they do shed are generally lighter and less noticeable. Poodles also need to be groomed regularly, as their hair needs to be clipped, groomed and brushed often to keep it looking healthy.
Poodles are intelligent and active dogs that benefit, healthwise, from a balanced diet that contains a variety of foods. The right nutrition should include kibble or canned food, proteins such as beef, chicken, fish, lamb, wild game, or eggs, as well as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Poodles also need a good amount of fatty acids for their coat, so adding healthy fats such as oil, lard, and flaxseed to their meals is a good idea.
Before adopting a Poodle, there are several essential items you should obtain. This list includes food, food and water bowls, a collar, regular and heavy duty leashes, ID tags, pet bedding, nail clippers, a brush and comb, toys, treats, appropriate sized crates, and a shampoo and conditioner specifically designed for dogs. For safety, a lifejacket designed for pets should be considered when near water and for walks in the dark, a reflective safety vest is strongly recommended. You may also want to purchase a brushing glove, teeth cleaning tools, and disinfectant wipes.
Poodles come in four size categories: Toy, Miniature, Medium, and Standard. Toy Poodles usually weigh around 4-6 pounds and stand 10 inches or less, making them the smallest of the four sizes. Miniature Poodles are usually between 10-15 inches tall and weigh about 15 pounds. Medium Poodles typically measure 15-20 inches tall and weigh around 30-45 pounds. The largest size, Standard Poodles, can range anywhere from 15 inches tall all the way up to 24 inches tall and weigh about 45-70 pounds.
Every Poodle is different, so there is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. Generally, your Poodle will benefit from at least 60 minutes of walking or active play each day. That said, this time should be divided into smaller chunks, rather than all at once. For instance, you can take your pup on two 30-minute walks or four 15-minute walks. Different activities such as fetch, agility, nose work, or obedience training are beneficial, too. You want to make sure your Poodle is getting a good mix of physical exercise and mental stimulation.
Poodles have a wonderful temperament and are usually a great breed for kids to be around. Poodles are active, intelligent, and devoted to their owners, so they can provide a lot of fun and affection for the whole family. They are highly trainable, loyal, and very excited to please their humans, so training your Poodle to be obedient should be a cinch. Since they are great watchdogs, Poodles are also able to alert their owners when there is an unfamiliar person or noise.
The amount of time you need to dedicate to training a Poodle will vary greatly depending on the age, breed, and individual temperament of your dog. Generally speaking, an adult Poodle should receive at least 15 to 20 minutes of training daily. This should be broken down into several short sessions in order to keep your dog focused and engaged. The type of training you conduct will influence the time needed. If basic obedience is the goal, rely on positive reinforcement techniques such as food or toys as rewards and utilize plenty of short, simple commands.
