Questions & Answers
Poodles are an extremely independent, intelligent breed of dog, making them an interesting breed to own! They are highly trainable and have an active personality that keeps owners entertained. They are extremely loyal and make great family pets. What really sets Poodles apart however, is their unique look. Their coat can be cut to take many different, creative forms, making them stand out from nearly every other breed of dog. The coat can also be dyed and groomed in many different ways, allowing owners to choose from a variety of looks.
Generally speaking, there is no definitive answer as to whether or not poodles will cause allergies. Every person is unique when it comes to their susceptibility to allergies. A person's individual sensitivity to allergies comes from a variety of factors, such as their genes and the environment. Additionally, the severity of allergies can vary greatly between individuals. While poodles are considered to be a low-shedding breed and are often thought of as hypoallergenic, this does not mean they will definitely not cause you to have allergies.
Poodles do have some special dietary needs due to their unique digestive systems. They tend to have sensitive stomachs and are prone to allergies, so their meals should be comprised of high-quality, hypoallergenic ingredients that agree with their unique digestive anatomy. It's important to be mindful of what and how much your Poodle consumes, as their stomachs may forgive overindulgence to an extent, but they can still end up with an upset tummy full of gas, bloating, and discomfort.
First, you should make sure your home is appropriately sized and prepared for your new Poodle. To do this, you should section off a designated area that your pet can call its own. Make sure to also clear any furniture or small objects that could pose a risk for your new companion. Secondly, buy a few essential items, such as food, a water bowl, a bed, toys, and grooming supplies. Once those are in place, you should create a routine for your pet such as scheduled walks and potty breaks.
Poodles come in four distinct sizes: Standard, Miniature, Toy, and Teacup. The Standard Poodle is the largest, and stands at over 15 inches tall and weighs between 40-70 pounds. Miniature Poodles are smaller and stand between 11 and 15 inches tall, but still have the same characteristically curly-coated appearance as Standard Poodles; and they weigh between 15-17 pounds. Toy Poodles are even smaller, standing only 10 inches tall and weighing between 4-6 pounds.
Poodles are an energetic and intelligent breed, and regular exercise is essential to their physical and emotional health. Depending on the age and breed of your Poodle, exercise requirements can vary. Generally speaking, a 30 minute walk and some playtime each day is recommended for a healthy Poodle. However, if your Poodle is a larger breed, they may require more vigorous exercise to keep their muscles and joints strong. For those familiar with the breed, agility, tracking, and behavior modification activities all offer a great way for Poodles to get exercise and stay physically and mentally stimulated.
Generally speaking, Poodles get along very well with children of all ages. With their friendly disposition and gentle nature, Poodles have the patience to put up with lots of playtime roughhousing. That said, they don't always like being grabbed and handled too roughly. Poodle owners must teach their kids how to interact with their pup in a safe, mindful, and responsible manner. Poodles are social animals, so the more human contact and socialization with children they get, the better they will behave and the greater the bond will be.
Training your Poodle is a great way to connect with your pup, as well as teach proper behaviors. A few key steps to start teaching your furry friend are: start with basic commands such as sit and stay; reward him when he does something correctly; make sure to be consistent; use positive reinforcement; provide plenty of exercise; and offer a toy or food reward if your pooch learns something new. When training, it's important to remain patient and reward your pup for properly responding to commands.
