Questions & Answers
A Poodle is a highly intelligent and active breed of dog. Although they are often associated with the French, the Poodle was actually developed in Germany as a type of water retriever. Today, Poodles come in three sizes: standard, miniature, and toy. This breed is known for its hypoallergenic coat, which can range from wiry to curly to soft and silky. Poodles are also renowned for their intelligence, loving nature, and aptitude for a variety of activities that include obedience, agility, flyball, tracking, and more.
Poodles have coats that can be either curly or corded, with a water-resistant and hypoallergenic outer coat and feathery softer undercoat. Curly-coated poodles have tight curls that can be either close clipped or show-clipped, while corded poodles have either a rastafarian or Romanian lion-esque clip. Most poodles have a single coat color ranging from white, apricot, and black, to silver, brown, café-au-lait, grey, and blue.
Poodles are very active and intelligent dogs and, as such, should be given quality food that is specifically formulated to meet their nutritional needs. When choosing the best food for your Poodle, the best option is a high-quality, species-appropriate diet made from premium ingredients. The diet should include a balance of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, fiber, and vitamins and minerals. It's important to remember that Poodles are highly sensitive to grains, so look for a food that does not contain corn, wheat, or soy.
Before getting a Poodle, you will want to make sure you have all the essential items for the health and care of your new pet. Some of these items include a dog collar and leash combo, food and dishes, a grooming brush, nail trimmers, dog shampoo, a bed, toys and treats, and lastly, an ID tag. A crate or kennel may also be necessary as a safe place for your pup.
Poodles come in three sizes: Toy, Miniature, and Standard. Toy poodles stand just 10 inches or smaller when full-grown while Standard poodles are usually 15 inches or more. Miniature poodles are usually between 10 and 15 inches when full-grown. All sizes inherit the same amount of intelligence and enthusiasm, although the mini and toy sizes may require slightly more exercise due to their smaller frame. No matter which size you choose, enjoy hours of love and fun with your adorable and loyal Poodle.
Generally speaking, it is recommended to walk your Poodle for at least 30 minutes per day. This amount of exercise is good for the Poodle's health, and it can help keep behavior problems at bay. However, if your Poodle is high energy or is particularly active, you might want to consider longer walks. Pay attention to signs that your Poodle may need more exercise, such as climbing on furniture, excessive barking or chewing, or being restless. If any of these signs happen, it may be time to add extra walks or hikes to their daily routine.
Poodles can make great pets for first-time owners! Not only are they intelligent and loyal companions, but they are also relatively low-maintenance dogs that don't require much in the way of grooming. Poodles come in many sizes and haves varied temperaments, so it is important to consider which size and type to best fit your lifestyle and environment before making a decision. Because they are an active breed, they require plenty of exercise and stimulation, as well as lots of love and attention.
The amount of time you need to allocate each day to train your Poodle will depend largely upon their age, level of obedience training, and your availability. A guideline for training a Poodle can be as little as 15 minutes per day in the beginning stages, or an hour or more for more advanced and complicated commands. As the Poodle progresses, you can gradually reduce the amount of time to maintain the dog's obedience and foster further development.
