Questions & Answers
Poodles come in three sizes standard, miniature, and toy. An often overlooked fact is that poodle breeders developed the color variations of the breed from wild poodles. Poodles often excel in agility, obedience, conformation, water retrievals, and therapy work. Due to their intelligence, poodles thrive with active families and love to swim and play. Poodles have curly hair and their coat may be corded or clipped short according to breed standards. They do not shed often and need regular grooming and bathing.
Poodles are hypoallergenic and are considered to be one of the non-shedding breeds. Although poodles will have some hair loss, the amount is minimal compared to other breeds. Poodle coats are composed of silky fur that typically does not shed in the traditional sense, but rather matts and gets tangled if not properly groomed. Additionally, since poodles produce less dander than other breeds, they are generally hypoallergenic.
Poodles have a unique dietary requirement, so it is important to consult with a veterinarian and pet nutritionist in order to make an appropriate dietary plan. It is suggested to feed your Poodle a high-quality, premium pet food with complete and balanced nutrition, as well as additional dietary supplements. These foods are specifically formulated for a Poodle's needs and should be selected based on their age, lifestyle, and activity, as well as specific muscle-condition needs. Another important factor to consider is sensitivities and allergies, as Poodles are more prone to allergy and digestive problems.
First, you'll need to make sure your home is safe for your new Poodle. A few key steps include: checking your home for any choke hazards, like small objects or wires that could be easily ingested and ensuring that your other pets have been spayed/neutered and have had the appropriate vaccinations and behavior training. You should also make sure you have the necessary supplies such as an indoor bed, food/water bowl, nail clippers, a brush and collar.
The size of your Poodle puppy will depend on the type of Poodle--Toy, Miniature, or Standard--you choose since each Poodle breed type has its own height and weight range. A Toy Poodle is considered to be less than 10 inches tall and weigh less than 6 pounds, while a Miniature Poodle will typically range between 10 to 15 inches tall and weigh 12 to 16 pounds. Lastly, a Standard Poodle can be at least 15 inches tall and weigh more than 45 pounds.
Absolutely! Taking your Poodle out for a run can be an excellent way to provide them with physical exercise and mental stimulation so long as certain precautions are taken. First and foremost, you should always ensure that your dog has room to move without feeling crowded or pressured. Do some research into trails or parks that feature larger amounts of space and offer plenty of other dogs for your pet to interact with. Additionally, it is important to provide your Poodle with plenty of fluids before, during, and after each run as they can tire easily and become dehydrated rapidly when exposed to the elements.
Generally speaking, Poodles are great family dogs and tend to get along very well with children. They are notoriously gentle and affectionate, and don't typically exhibit behavior that could be seen as aggressive. It's important to raise a Poodle properly with love, discipline and consistency, as this will help ensure that it develops a good relationship with any children in the home. As long as their basic needs are being met, Poodles are generally very good-natured and can make excellent playmates.
The amount of time you need to train Poodles each day depends on numerous factors, including the age of the Poodle, its level of obedience, and its experience with performing certain tasks. Generally speaking, young Poodles need more time spent training on a daily basis than older Poodles. For puppies, a minimum of 15 minutes per day for basic commands (sit, stay, lie down) and 10-15 minutes per day for more complex commands can be beneficial. Experienced Poodles with proper obedience should get at least 10-15 minutes of training per day.
