Questions & Answers
Poodles are considered to be part of the non-sporting group of dogs according to the American Kennel Club. The breed has been around for centuries, originating in Germany as water retrievers. This is still true today, with the standard Poodle being the largest of the three varieties while the Toy Poodle is the smallest. Poodles make great family pets due to their intelligence and trainability. While active and energetic, they also have a tendency to be calmer and have a more docile demeanor.
Poodles may be considered hypoallergenic due to their low-shedding coats. This is because much of the dander that can cause an allergic reaction tends to be trapped in the dog's fur and is released into the air rather than released onto furniture and carpets. Because of this, poodles may cause fewer allergies for people with sensitivities, though it is important to remember that you may still be allergic to a poodle since everybody reacts differently.
Poodles are high-energy animals that need a balanced diet to stay healthy. Because of this, Poodles should never be given human food, such as chocolate, garlic, onions, or any type of sugar. Additionally, anything with added fat, like bacon, should also be avoided. Poodles should not be given rawhide, bones, or other hard objects as these can damage their teeth and possibly cause intestinal blockage. When it comes to treats, Poodles should only be given healthy, purpose-made treats specifically designed for them.
Preparing for your new Poodle is an exciting experience! It's important to make sure that you have the proper supplies such as a crate, collar and leash, food and water bowls, a designated area for bathroom duties (yes, this breed is generally very organized about such things!), grooming supplies and toys. After you've acquired the basics, consider enrolling in a puppy obedience class and starting socialization. To ensure your pup is getting proper nutrition, seek advice from a veterinarian. Be sure to create a schedule and stick to it for feeding, exercise, activities and rest.
Poodles are not typically categorized as a large breed of dog. On average, Standard Poodles weigh between 45-70lbs and stand at a height of 15-22 inches, making them a medium-sized breed. Although their size might vary depending on their gender, Standard Poodles will usually be smaller than a lot of large breeds which typically grow to the 25-27 inch range and weigh 70lbs and above. However, Poodles are larger than the Miniature and Teacup types which usually weigh 15-17lbs and stand only 10-15 inches.
Poodles are incredibly active dogs that thrive on physical and mental stimulation. They require daily exercise, plenty of playtime, and socialization with their families and other animals. They are known to be agile, alert, and active, making them an ideal breed for people who love to take their dogs on long walks, trips to the dog park, hikes, and other outings. Poodles also possess an impressive intelligence that allows them to excel in activities such as agility, obedience, and even search and rescue.
Yes, Poodles can definitely be a great choice for first-time owners. They are intelligent and generally eager to please, making them relatively easy to train. In addition, they are typically good-natured and friendly, getting along well with family members and visitors alike, and they usually enjoy being around children. Poodles also tend to be quite low-maintenance in terms of grooming, typically needing to be trimmed only every few months. Finally, Poodles are generally very healthy dogs, exhibiting fewer physical issues that you might encounter with some breeds.
Absolutely Poodles are renowned for their intelligence and resourcefulness. Highly trainable, this breed is considered to be one of the most obedient of all breeds. Poodles excel at a variety of tasks, from agility and retrieving games to herding and conformation. They think quickly and benefit from frequent positive reinforcement. With an eagerness to please, they enjoy spending time with their human family. Poodles have even been known to attempt to teach themselves new tricks and figure out ways to open cabinets.
