Questions & Answers
Poodles are a medium-sized toy breed from the non-sporting group of dogs. They are considered the second most intelligent breed after the Border Collie and can be found in several countries. Poodles come in four varieties, Standard, Miniature, Toy, and Teacup. Common among all are long, curly coats with a distinguished look. They possess a unique combination of intelligence, athleticism, and style. Poodles are lively companions and enjoy everything from obedience and agility to running and performing tricks. They are active, graceful, and devoted family pets.
Poodles are considered to be non-shedding dogs due to their coat which is made up of thick curly hair. Their coat is designed to keep dirt and debris from going into their skin. This is why they need to be groomed regularly because without regular brushing and bathing their coat can become matted and tangled. Poodles do not have the same traditional shedding of other dogs because this type of grooming helps to keep their coat clean and healthy.
Poodles are active, intelligent dogs that require a balanced diet to stay healthy. As such, they should be fed a specially formulated diet consisting of high-quality, grain-free kibble made from natural ingredients such as lean proteins, healthy fats, whole grains, and fruits and vegetables. Depending on your pet's size and general activity level, they may also need to supplement their diet with some wet food, along with a variety of treats.
Preparing for a new Poodle can be quite exciting and a lot of fun! Start by researching the breed, so you can become familiar with the characteristics, size, and activity level. Then think about the daily needs of the dog including food, grooming, exercise, and veterinary care. After that, consider what type of home environment is best-suited for a Poodle. Acquire all the necessary supplies for your pup such as a crate, toys, and a leash, and make sure you have enough space for your new friend.
The size of a Poodle puppy can vary depending on the parent’s size. Generally, Standard Poodles reach about 15 inches at the shoulder and weigh between 40 and 70 pounds full grown. Miniature Poodles will grow to between 10 and 15 inches tall and are expected to weigh between 12 and 20 pounds when full grown. Toy Poodles can reach from 10 inches and down to about a foot and a half tall and weigh between 4 and 6 pounds when they are full grown. Depending on the line of Poodles, your puppy could reach any of the expected sizes.
Absolutely! It is not only okay to take your Poodle running, but it is encouraged. Poodles have a sporting mentality, so they are likely to love going on runs with you. Before doing so, however, you should ensure that your Poodle is of an appropriate level of physical fitness. If your Poodle does not have a habit of long-distance running, then it should be gradually built up to the correct level by taking short and slow runs each day.
Generally speaking, Poodles get along well with other pets when they are properly trained and socialized. In fact, Poodles make excellent family companions and they usually do great with other animals, such as cats and smaller animals like hamsters and guinea pigs. It's important to remember that Poodles are naturally sociable creatures, so it's best to introduce them to other pets from a young age in order to minimize any potential problems or aggression. Socialization is a key part of their behavior training and helps to ensure positive interactions with other animals.
Training your Poodle should be a positive experience, starting with socialization when the pup is young. Begin by teaching basic commands such as 'sit', 'stay', 'no', 'come' and 'lie down' and always give rewards when they obey. Use short and simple commands when training, no more than 2 or 3 words, and say them in a calm and gentle voice. Be consistent in your training and use the same phrases each time so that your Poodle can easily understand you. To prevent boredom, mix up the training with play sessions between lessons.
