Questions & Answers
Poodles are intelligent, loyal, and loving companion dogs that make great family pets. They come in two sizes Standard and Miniature and several colors. Poodles have curly coats that require regular grooming to maintain health and appearance. Training a Poodle is relatively easy due to their intelligence and enthusiasm to please their owners. Poodles love to stay active, enjoy swimming, playing fetch, and going for walks. They are also great company and they like snuggling up and cuddling on the couch.
Poodles are a breed that often get associated with non-shedding coats, as they are popularly known for their fluffy curly fur. While Poodles do indeed have a higher tendency to not shed, they are still considered a hypoallergenic breed, meaning that there could still be some shedding involved. Poodles, like all other dogs, will still shed a minimal amount due to normal shedding cycles, such as in the shedding of the softer undercoat of their fur.
Poodles are a unique breed, so it's important to select a dog food specifically designed for their dietary needs. It's recommended that Poodles have high-quality food that is rich in animal protein and that includes whole grains as well as healthy fats. A good dog food for Poodles will also contain vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and omega-3 fatty acids. Look for an option that is tailored for the breed and age range of your particular Poodle. A premium brand that is AAFCO approved is the best choice.
Before adopting a Poodle, it is important to have a few basics ready and in place. It is wise to purchase any home items or supplies before bringing the new pet home. Make sure to have plenty of food and healthy snacks that are designed for small animals. In addition to food and water dishes, toys, bedding, and grooming supplies will all come in handy. Additionally, Poodles need weekly exercise and brushing, so plan to carve out a few minutes each day for those activities.
There are three size varieties of Poodles – standard, miniature, and toy. Standard Poodles are the largest, typically standing at 15 inches or more at the shoulder and weighing over 40 pounds. Miniature Poodles grow up to 15 inches tall and are usually between 10-15 pounds in weight. Toy Poodles are the smallest, usually standing at 10 inches or less and weighing no more than 7 pounds.
Your Poodle will benefit from as much physical activity as possible, but the exact amount of minutes per day to walk them depends on many factors. Age, breed, size, and health status all need to be taken into account when considering what a healthy exercise routine for your pup should look like. Generally, a Poodle of any age will do well with a brisk walk of 30 minutes per day, but some may need an hour or two of light to moderate exercise split into two or three sessions throughout a day.
Poodles are known to be gentle and intelligent companions, making them a wonderful choice for families. Although it is true that some poodles find it difficult to interact with young children, the majority of poodles get along with kids very well. Because of their bright personalities, they tend to learn social cues quickly and will bond with children when given the chance. Poodles will require some training and supervision to ensure that they are not aggressive, and if given regular and appropriate exercise, they are sure to be excellent family pets.
Training a Poodle can be an incredibly rewarding experience, as they are loyal, intelligent, and active dogs that respond very well to positive reinforcement. With that said, it does require patience and consistent practice, as with any other breed. In general, Poodles are eager to learn, and it's beneficial to begin with basic commands like "sit" or "down" and socializing with other dogs and people at a young age. Poodles may take longer to potty train, but it is possible with patience and positive reinforcement.
