Questions & Answers
Poodles are an incredibly intelligent and highly trainable dog breed, belonging to the Non-Sporting Group. These dogs come in three sizes Standard, Miniature, and Toy with a variety of coat colors and styles. Poodles have a long history of being associated with royalty and have become one of the most recognizable breeds in the canine world. Besides being outgoing, friendly, and highly social, these dogs have a unique look to them, courtesy of their trademark puffy coat and lion-like hairstyle.
The Poodle coat is quite iconic. It is unique in having distinct curls and a bouncy feel to the touch. The breed standard calls for long, thick, evenly-textured fur which can range in textures, from straight to tight curls. Usually the fur is clipped in the traditional “poodle clip,” which is a series of small balls, topknots, and points. The fur should be groomed regularly and bathed or wiped down every two months.
Poodles generally require a highly nutritious diet that consists of proteins and complex carbohydrates. Examples of suitable proteins could include chicken, beef, and fish. Complex carbohydrates in the form of grains, such as wheat, oats, corn, and barley are also strongly recommended. Vegetables, such as sweet potatoes and carrots may also be added to the diet. Additionally, organic, low-fat, high-quality dog foods can provide much of the necessary nutritional requirements. Many pet owners also choose to feed their poodles home-cooked meals to ensure the animal is provided with the optimal nutrition.
Poodle have unique needs that should be taken into consideration. Depending on whether you have a Standard, Miniature, or Toy Poodle, there may be certain size and activity based requirements. For instance, Standard Poodle are larger in size and may require more space to exercise than their Miniature or Toy counterparts. Additionally, all Poodle types need appropriate levels of physical and mental stimulation, so activities such as daily walks, playing ball, obedience training, and problem-solving games are great for them.
A Poodle puppy's size as an adult can vary depending on which specific variety you have. Toy and Miniature Poodles typically become adults between 10 and 15 inches, weighing between 4 and 10 pounds. Standard Poodles become adults between 15 and 22 inches, weighing between 40 and 70 pounds. The amount a puppy grows, however, depends on their individual genetics and environment so there is no guaranteed way to predict an exact size for your specific puppy.
Poodles have a reputation for actually loving swimming. They have been known to be naturally good swimmers due to their incredibly thick yet lightweight single-layered coat. This coat helps them to stay buoyant in the water, making it seem like a natural fit for poodles and a favorite activity. Poodles were originally bred as a retriever dog, which helps explain why their swimming prowess has been developed over decades. With time, they have become comfortable in the water and many enjoy taking active and leisurely swims.
Typically, Poodles get along with other pets well. They tend to be social and thrive in an environment with people, other pets, and other animals. With proper socialization and introduction to other pets, this can help them to become comfortable in their new environment. With patience and consistency from the owner, Poodles can learn to feel comfortable and safe when meeting other pets. With the correct amount of exercise and positive reinforcement, they can create lasting bonds with other pets and become excellent family members.
Training a Poodle can be relatively easy due to their high intelligence, however, the difficulty depends on the individual. Some take to training quickly while others may find it more difficult. The best approach is to be patient and consistent with training, be sure to use positive reinforcement to reward good behavior. Don't be afraid to incorporate activities like swimming or agility training which can help keep the dog focused and can help bond between dog and owner. Additionally, engaging in activities like obedience classes or agility testing can help strengthen established commands and reward good behavior.
