Questions & Answers
Poodles are among the oldest and most recognizable dog breeds! Originally bred as water retrievers in the late 18th Century, Poodles were prized for their intelligence and ability to hunt. Today, Poodles are an easily recognizable and beloved breed that have come to be known for their elegant coats and unique hairstyles. Fun facts about Poodles include the fact that they are incredibly smart and independent; they are exceptionally loyal and affectionate; and their hypoallergenic coats make them a great pet for those with allergies.
While no pet can be guaranteed to be 100% allergen-free, poodles are generally favored by allergy sufferers due to their long coats of tightly curled fur, which naturally repel allergens. They also lack the traditional pet fur that can cause allergic reactions in many people, instead having hair that is more like human hair. That said, it is still possible to be allergic to poodles, so be sure to spend some time with one before committing to adoption. Additionally, owners can reduce contact allergens by frequently grooming their pet.
Poodles do have special nutritional needs due to their size and activity level. Poodles need a high-quality, balanced diet for energy and growth. A diet appropriate for a Poodle should have plenty of high-protein foods, such as lean meats and fish, along with healthy fats, complex carbohydrates, and essential vitamins and minerals. It is a good idea to feed Poodles several smaller meals throughout the day instead of one large meal since they have smaller stomachs. Make sure to also consider any dietary restriction your poodle may have, such as allergies or intolerances.
Poodles do require some specific care to keep them healthy and happy. Poodles come in three sizes: standard, miniature, and toy. Standard poodles are usually more active than their smaller counterparts. As such, poodles of all sizes need regular exercise, daily brushing, and periodic trimming of their fur coat. Proper nutrition is also important for maintaining their health. Veterinary checkups are important so any health problems can be addressed. Dental hygiene is also important, so daily brushing with a proven toothpaste product is recommended.
Poodles come in three size varieties, Toy, Miniature, and Standard. The Toy poodle typically stands 8 to 10 inches tall and weighs 4 to 6 pounds. Miniature poodles stand 11 to 15 inches tall and usually weigh 12 to 15 pounds. The standard poodle is the largest of the three varieties and typically stands over 15 inches tall and weighs between 40 to 70 pounds. The stature of the standard poodle falls between a middleweight and a heavyweight. Regardless of size, poodles are known for their elegant gait, intelligence, and dignified appearance.
Generally, Poodles are enthusiastic and proficient swimmers. As a breed, they have a natural affinity for being in the water. Because of their water-repellent coats, their love of swimming wasn't hindered by certain coat problems that many other breeds faced. Poodles aren't just be able to doggy paddle around either-they are built for swimming long distances and can even learn to perform tricks in the water. Because they enjoy spending time in the water, they are an excellent companion for pool play, boat outings, or a relaxing day trip to the beach.
Poodles have long been recognized as one of the most popular breeds in the world to keep as family pets. They make excellent companions, as they are loyal, loveable and highly intelligent. Their adaptable nature makes them a great fit for both active and more laid-back families. Poodles thrive on companionship, and their playfulness can offer up lots of laughter and fun with the whole family. They are also usually eager to please, making them relatively easy to train and respond quickly to commands.
Training Poodles can vary drastically depending on their individual goals, breed, temperament, and ability. Generally speaking, anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes per day is a good starting point. This may be broken up into two or three shorter training sessions. Ultimately, the amount of time needed to train a Poodle daily will depend on the task, as well as the Poodle's acceptance of commands. The number of commands that can be taught, and how consistently they can be performed will all have an effect on how much time is needed to complete the training.
