Questions & Answers
Poodles are oftentimes considered to be the second most intelligent dog breed, after the Border Collie. They are part of a group of "utility" dogs and belong to the non-sport dog breed group known as the Toy/Companion dogs. The Poodle is a CKC (Continental Kennel Club) recognized breed that originates in Germany and is one of the most beloved and popular of all the breeds, both as a pet or a show dog. American Kennel Club recognizes three sizes: Standard, Miniature and Toy.
Poodles are considered hypoallergenic because of their low-shedding coats. They don't typically shed, and the amount of dander produced by them is generally lower than that of other breeds. However, not all individuals who suffer from allergies will have the same degree of reaction to any given breed, so it is ultimately up to the individual to decide if a Poodle is the right match for them. Some Poodles require more frequent grooming than others, and the amount of allergen exposure can vary greatly with how often the pet is groomed.
Poodles should not be given fatty or greasy foods, as these may lead to obesity and a slew of other health problems. Other particular foods to avoid are onions, garlic, grapes, and raisins, since these can cause serious gastrointestinal issues such as vomiting, diarrhea and dehydration. Chocolate is also toxic to dogs, so it should never be given to a poodle. Additionally, poodles should not be fed table scraps, as these can contain unhealthy ingredients and fats that are not conducive to a healthy diet.
Preparing for your new Poodle is an exciting task that will require careful planning and attention to detail. Start with researching the breed and understanding its needs and prospective behaviors. Make sure you can provide for them the level of care they need. Prepare a suitable living space with a comfortable bed, food and water dishes, and toys. Make sure any fences or boundaries you have in place are safe for your Poodle. Set up a grooming schedule for yourself to make sure your Poodle's coat and nails are maintained.
A Poodle puppy's size is determined primarily by the size of its parents. Toy Poodles typically grow up to be around 10 inches while Miniature Poodles usually reach 15 inches. Standard Poodles, however, can grow to be as tall as 24 inches. So, without knowing the lineage of your Poodle puppy it is difficult to accurately predict the size. However, if both of the puppy's parents are of the same breed and size, you can generally expect the puppy to reach the same size as its parents.
Poodles are an active breed of dog, so they need a good amount of exercise to stay healthy and happy. On average, they need about two hours of purposeful exercise every day. This can include walking, jogging, playing catch, fetching a ball, or even agility training. Exercises should be moderately intense, and your Poodle should be able to utilize their muscle and agility through regular physical activity. With the right amount of exercise, your Poodle will be healthy and content, reducing the risk of boredom and destructive behavior.
Poodles can certainly make great family dogs and can even be suitable for some families with children. Though they may do best with older kids, as they are a smaller breed and can be prone to injury if handled too roughly. Poodles have a lot of energy and need daily exercise, but they typically adapt well to an indoor environment and should have plenty of opportunity to be active. Since they are highly intelligent, they can be trained to follow basic commands. Furthermore, they are gentle, affectionate, and loyal, so they can become lifelong family companions.
Absolutely! Poodles are known for their intelligence and often rank among the top breeds in obedience and working categories. They were originally bred as water retrieving dogs and are especially skilled at following commands and being trained for tricks. Poodles are quick learners and eager to please their owners. They respond well to positive reinforcement and consistent repetition. Their intelligence also means they can be sensitive and perceptive, so it's important to be patient and foster a loving, supportive relationship. Poodles make loyal and loving companions that can be counted on to keep you both entertained and safe.
