Questions & Answers
A Poodle is a breed of highly intelligent and obedient dogs that belong to the same family as spaniels and setters. They come in three sizes: Standard, Miniature and Toy, with the Standard variety standing anywhere from 15 to 22 inches tall. Poodles have a long history, having been around since the 16th century as waterdogs. Their reputation as high-standing lapdogs among the aristocracy solidified through time. More recently, Poodles have become well-known for their elegance in the show ring.
Poodles are often identified as being hypoallergenic, as their fur is less likely to cause a serious reaction in people with allergies to dogs. While it's true that their hair does not shed, their coats still produce dander, infamous for triggering allergic reactions. Some Poodles produce a lower amount of dander than others and the molecular structure of the breed's fur is also a contributing factor. Different coat colors and types--shedding and non-shedding--also play a role.
Poodles should not be fed people food or any food that is greasy, salty, spicy, or sweet, as these kinds of foods can cause stomach or intestine issues. Additionally, refrain from feeding Poodles raw/undercooked meats, poultry, eggs, fish, or any other kind of uncooked food as these can contain bacteria or parasites that may cause a potential health threat. Furthermore, it’s important to avoid feeding Poodles bones, as these can splinter upon being digested and cause intestines blockages.
Poodles have a few specific requirements that need to be met as part of their general care. Grooming is an important aspect of their maintenance, as the soft and curly fur can become matted if ignored. Therefore, regular brushing and combing is recommended in order to keep the coat healthy and tangle-free. Additionally, because of their high energy levels, exercise is necessary to keep them mentally and physically fit. Positive reinforcement training is also beneficial in order to ensure that they do not develop destructive behaviors.
The size of a Poodle puppy can vary significantly depending on its breed. Generally, Miniature Poodles, the smallest of the three varieties, will grow up to 10-15 inches tall and can weigh between 6-9 pounds. Standard Poodles, the largest, will grow up to 15 inches or more and weigh between 45-70 pounds. Lastly, Toy Poodles will typically stand up to 10 inches and weigh between 4-6 pounds full grown. Factors such as nutrition and activity levels can also play a role in determining the size of your Poodle puppy when fully grown.
Generally, it is recommended that an adult Poodle should get at least 30 minutes of structured exercise on a daily basis. This exercise can be either an off-leash walk, fetching a ball, or any other form of physical activity. If your Poodle is less active, they should get at least 15 minutes of exercise every day. An easy way to make sure your Poodle is getting enough exercise is to aim for one hour of walking each day, split into two 30-minute sessions. That way, you can keep your pup healthy and happy.
Poodles are well-known to be highly social and intelligent, making them a great breed when it comes to family life. Generally, these loyal and loving dogs adapt well to children, provided that proper socialization and training are done in order to encourage positive interactions. Poodles are very patient and are not known as a breed with aggression issues, so with proper training, supervision, and socialization from an early age, they are typically wonderful with kids. Of course, it's important to remember that each individual dog is unique, so what works for one may not be necessary for another.
The amount of time you need to allocate to train a Poodle per day will depend upon the age and experience of your Poodle and the training goals you have in mind. Generally speaking, at least 15 to 20 minutes of deliberate, consistent training, 5 to 6 days per week is recommended. If you’re training a puppy, you may need to break the sessions up into shorter intervals. Very young puppies often cannot focus for longer than 5 to 10 minutes at a time.
