Questions & Answers
Poodles are considered to be one of the most intelligent dog breeds, so they are able to learn impressive tricks while also being easy to train. Not only that, they are one of the oldest dog breeds and have been around since before the 15th century, making them a unique breed that has lasted throughout the years! Additionally, a fascinating fact about Poodles is that they are the only breed of dog to come in three sizes Standard, Miniature, and Toy. All three sizes still carry the same basic traits and temperament of their larger ancestor, the Standard Poodle.
Poodles are indeed non-shedding. This is because their coats consist of tight curls that protect the fur from collecting loose hairs from the skin. While not all Poodles are the same, their hair and coats can be groomed to be kept ground to an ideal length and thickness that can further reduce the amount of shedding. However, this doesn't mean Poodles don't require regular grooming maintenance to preserve the condition of their coat. Poodles coats can still be subject to dirt, dust, and other particles that can buildup over time.
Poodles are a unique and clever breed of dog that often require special dietary considerations. Generally speaking, these active dogs should be fed a high-quality dog food formulated for their size and age to ensure they are receiving all of the essential nutrients. This can include a blend of dry kibble or wet food, but treats should also be given in moderation to prevent unhealthy weight gain. Since Poodles were originally bred to assist in duck hunting, they especially like wet food with a fish flavor.
It is essential to ensure that your home is appropriately prepared for a new Poodle. Begin by creating a safe, comfortable environment for your pet. Puppy-proofing your home can help prevent accidents and protect your pet. Make sure to remove any objects that can cause harm, such as electrical cords, toxic plants, or sharp edges. Next, you should get all the necessary puppy supplies. These should include a crate, food, bowls, a collar and leash, and toys.
Poodles come in four distinct sizes: Standard, Miniature, Toy, and Teacup. The Standard Poodle is the oldest variety and is usually the biggest of the group, typically standing higher than 15 inches and weighing around 45 to 70 pounds. Miniature Poodles usually stand between 10 and 15 inches and weigh around 15 to 17 pounds. Toy Poodles are the smallest, typically from just 4 to 6 inches tall and weighing only 4 to 6 pounds.
Poodles are an active breed and need regular exercise to stay healthy and content. An adult Poodle should get around 30 minutes of exercise every day, broken up into several smaller sessions if possible. Exercise should be a combination of activities such as walks, runs, playtime, and swimming. They are a highly trainable breed and responsive to learning obedience exercises. To keep them mentally stimulated, they should also be given regular tasks to do such as agility or trick training. With the right combination of physical and mental exercise, Poodles can remain happy and healthy.
Poodles are often noted for their pleasant and even-tempered personalities, making them a great choice for households with multiple pets. A well-socialized Poodle should do great when living with other household pets, such as cats and small mammals. That being said, introductions should still be done slowly and in a positive, pressure-free setting. Start by giving the Poodle and other pet their own space, and then take it slow with beneficial activities such as walking together, playing together, or just setting in the same room with one another.
Properly training a Poodle requires consistency, patience and consistency. The best way to start is to begin with a great foundation of basic dog obedience commands and potty training, so that your Poodle can better understand you and your expectations. After the foundational skills have been established, you will need to make sure that your dog is introduced to an array of obstacles, environments, animals, and situations, so that he can understand and respond appropriately to different kinds of stimuli.
