Questions & Answers
Poodles are a unique and distinctive breed of dog, belonging to the non-sporting or utility group. Bred as a working dog to retrieve birds and other small animals, their intelligence and willingness to please makes them ideal as a companion dog as well. Poodles are known for their thick, beautiful coats, ranging from curly to corded. They also have a fairly broad head and an elegant, athletic look. Poodles require weekly brushing to maintain their coat and can come in several sizes, including miniature, standard, and toy.
Poodles are known for their unique coat of fur. Their coats are usually made up of tightly curled fur which varies in texture and thickness depending on the breed. Standard Poodles have a more rigid feel while Toy Poodles have a finer and smoother coat. All Poodle coats are comprised of various shades of black, gray, silver, blue, cream, apricot and brown. Poodle coats are naturally hypoallergenic, non-shedding and water-resistant, making them ideal for those with allergies or other special concerns.
Poodles are very active and energetic dogs; therefore, it is important to feed them with a healthy and balanced diet. Avoid feeding them with any human foods, such as chocolate, onions, grapes, garlic, coffee, or alcoholic beverages, as they can be toxic and harmful. Other food items that must be avoided include raw fish, raw beef, raw eggs, rawhide, cooked bones, and excess amounts of fat. It's especially important to avoid food that contains too much salt or sugar as it can lead to health issues, such as obesity, diabetes, and dental disease.
Preparing for your new Poodle can be an exciting process! Make sure to have plenty of supplies purchased in advance such as food, treats, toys, bedding, grooming products, and a collar with tags including your contact information. Plan how your pup will fit into your home and family; look into doggy daycare facilities or other pet care providers if needed. If desired, research obedience or grooming classes in your area. It's also important to set boundaries with your pup; what behaviors are acceptable, what rooms they can access, etc.
Poodles are often regarded as small dogs due to their petite size. In the United States, the American Kennel Club (AKC) classifies the standard poodle as "medium" in size, with the toy and miniature poodle being classified as "small" and their petite body size averaging around 10-15 inches in height and 10-20 pounds in weight.
The general amount of exercise that a Poodle should get per day varies depending on age, health, and other factors. A general rule of thumb is that a dog should get between 30-60 minutes of walking or other exercise per day. For an adult Poodle, I would suggest that you aim for at least 45 minutes of walking each day. However, if your Poodle is young or especially energetic, you may want to increase your walk times to ensure they remain healthy and fit.
Poodles are beloved for their personality and intelligence, and they can be a good choice for first-time owners. By taking the time to understand their particular needs for exercise and mental stimulation, first-time owners can make sure that their Poodle will stay happy and healthy. Because they're highly trainable, they can be a great opportunity to learn how to work with a dog and create a strong bond. Poodles also take well to socialization, which makes them good candidates for first time owners who want to take their dog to places like dog parks and pet friendly stores.
Poodles are intelligent, devoted, and family-friendly dogs, and training them can be a rewarding and straightforward experience. While training may take more time and effort than some other breeds, particularly for highly-skilled activities such as agility or obedience, the process does not have to be especially laborious. With patience, consistency, and dedication, owners of Poodles can typically learn the ropes of the training process quickly and begin to see results in a reasonable timeframe.
