Questions & Answers
Poodles come in three primary sizes – Standard, Miniature, and Toy. All sizes are highly intelligent, making them a great working dog, and, due to their curly coat, are often mistaken for a purebred. In Germany, Poodles have been used for waterfowl hunting since as early as the 1400s! The breed was boldly popularized by Louis XVI in France, who owned a white Standard Poodle named ‘Mops’. Poodles can learn a staggering variety of tricks, and their high intelligence leads to their penchant for problem-solving.
The Poodle's coat is synonymous with luxury. It is a wavy, thick coat that can be described as "cottony" or "raven-like". The coat does require maintenance, including regular brushing and combing to prevent matting, and regular trips to the groomer to keep up with trimming and bathing. Poodles typically have a double coat, with the sleek, tightly curled outer coat forming a unique look, and the undercoat providing insulation against the elements.
Poodles require a balanced diet that is tailored to their specific needs as a breed. Considering the amount of coat they have, healthy fats and proteins are an essential part of their dietary needs. To meet their dietary requirements, we recommend selecting food specifically designed for Poodles. This should have higher levels of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, as well as omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, such as those found in fresh fish and flaxseed.
To prepare your home for your new Poodle, it's important to create a safe environment. Begin by puppy-proofing by finding and securing any potential hazards such as poisonous plants, electrical cords, and stairs. Make sure to have the proper supplies and toys available before bringing your pup home. A cozy bed, collar and leash, food and water bowls, and plenty of stimulating toys will help your pup adjust to their new home.
Poodles come in three distinct sizes: Standard, Miniature, and Toy. The Standard Poodle typically measures 15 to 22 inches tall at the shoulder and weighs 45 to 70 pounds. Miniature Poodles are the most popular size, standing between 11 and 15 inches and weighing 10 to 15 pounds. The Toy Poodle is the smallest of the breed, standing between 8 and 10 inches tall and weighing about 4 to 6 pounds. It's important to note that larger size Poodles can be prone to joint problems.
The amount of exercise needed for a Poodle will vary depending on the age and breed of the dog, as well as the overall health and activity level of the individual animal. Generally, Poodles should get between 30 and 60 minutes of activity each day, split into several smaller walks. It is advisable to break up the walks so that your pooch gets enough aerobic exercise without becoming exhausted. This should include active playtime and, if you are able, a trip to a local park or playground. As a minimum requirement, your Poodle should receive at least 30 minutes of exercise each day.
Poodles can be loving, affectionate, and gentle companions to children. On the whole, they can get along well with kids, as long as their owners provide a structured, loving environment. It's important for children to be taught how to properly care for the poodle, and to understand that it is not an indestructible toy. When teaching kids to interact with a poodle, it's helpful for them to be taught that poodles are living creatures with emotions and needs, and that they should be handled carefully and with respect.
Absolutely! Poodles are considered smart canine companions because of their innate traits and behaviors. In fact, Poodles rank second on the list of most intelligent breeds in the world, according the American Kennel Club's canine intelligence classification. Poodles have often been revered for their capacity to learn new tricks quickly, as well as their ability to problem-solve. Studies have also found that Poodles exhibit a greater ability to comprehend complex verbal commands than other breeds. Their intelligence also enables them to understand and react to a variety of human emotions, making them a great companion to many.
