Questions & Answers
Poodles are an ancient breed and have existed in some form since the 1400s. In fact, poodles were originally bred as hunting and fishing dogs. Though they may appear delicate in their modern form, they are actually quite hardy. Their hypoallergenic coats are a combination of woolly undercoat, and a curly or corded topcoat, which can come in any color. Poodles are also known for being quite smart and easily trainable. Poodles have been known to take part in agility competitions and do particularly well in tracking and disc competitions.
Poodles can be hypoallergenic, depending on the lineage and coat variations. Miniature Poodles, Toy Poodles, and Standard Poodles that are bred and trained as hunting partners of people can produce a very light coat that is wavy or curly in texture and is usually more tolerable towards those with allergies. While the breed does not actually produce any less dander, Poodle fur is very lightweight and airborne allergens don't stick to the fur as much as other breeds.
Poodles have unique nutritional needs and requiring a specific diet to help them stay healthy. It's important to feed your Poodle a diet that is formulated to meet the nutritional specific needs for their small size and breed. High quality dry dog food with named meat as the first two ingredients is the best choice for a Poodle. Look for additional ingredients such as whole grains, and vegetables. Avoid products with artificial colors, sweeteners, or preservatives. It's also important to make sure the food has adequate protein, fat, and carbohydrates.
Before getting a Poodle, you should consider some essential items to ensure they are well cared for. These essentials should include a collar, leash, and name tag. It's also helpful to have a crate, bedding, toys, food and water dishes, shampoo, grooming supplies, and treats. Training materials like books and videos can help you better understand the breed and learn how to create a loving relationship with your pet. An appointment with a vet for wellness check-up is also important, as well as regular visits for vaccinations, check-ups, and parasite control.
It's difficult to predict the exact size your poodle puppy will reach at maturity, as size will depend on the pup's genetics, diet, and environment. Most Poodle puppies will begin their life in the range of 6-9 inches at the shoulder, weighing between 2 and 5 pounds, but some may be a bit larger at the lower end, or a bit smaller at the higher end of this range. Your pup's full-grown size will be determined by the breed standard for the type of Poodle you have.
It is recommended that Poodles get a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise per day, though the exact amount varies depending on the individual dog's size, age, and health. Walking is an ideal way to meet this daily exercise requirement since it provides needed physical activity and mental stimulation. It is best to walk your Poodle for at least 30 minutes every day, though to ensure that they remain healthy and happy, it is recommended that you walk them for at least 50 minutes. This should consist of a combination of a leisurely stroll and more vigorous activity.
Poodles are usually very friendly and gentle around kids, making them a wonderful pet for households with children. Known for their intelligence, poodles can be obedient and easily trainable, providing the proper socialization from an early age. Not only are they highly affectionate and loyal to their owners, but poodles are also very tolerant of children. With the right approach from both the parent and the pet, poodles can be a great companion for the whole family!
The amount of training time per day necessary for a Poodle depends on the individual situation. If you have a brand new puppy, you may want to start with just a few minutes a day and gradually increase to longer, more strenuous exercises as the pup grows. On the other hand, if you are dealing with a more mature Poodle, you could start with a longer session of 20-30 minutes each day and gradually decrease to maintenance-level exercise.
