Questions & Answers
Poodles are a loyal, intelligent and highly trainable class of dog recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC). These handsome canines can come in a variety of sizes including Toy, Miniature and Standard. They are famous for their distinctive curly coats and proud, upright carriage. Poodles are one of the oldest of all dog breeds and are thought to have originated in Germany, where they were used as retrievers on waterfowl hunting expeditions. These friendly pooches have since become popular family pets and have an endearing combination of playfulness and intelligence.
Poodles are hypoallergenic, meaning they are less likely to leave behind allergens from their coat that may affect those with allergies. While no breed of dog is completely hypoallergenic, poodles are considered to be one of the best for allergy sufferers. This is because they produce significantly less dander than most other breeds, making them preferable for those with allergies. Poodles' coats are also created in such a way that the hair does not shed much, and when it does, it should be easy to clean.
Poodles should not eat anything that is unhealthy, such as chocolate or other sweets, fatty foods, processed food, onions, garlic, or grapes. Additionally, you should not give them cooked bones, which can splinter and cause digestive blockages. Small items such as golf balls, small toys, and stones can be dangerous if swallowed and cause serious harm to the Poodle’s digestive system. You should also avoid feeding them foods that may be toxic to dogs, such as avocados, nuts, and macadamia nuts.
Before getting a Poodle, it's essential to equip yourself with the supplies necessary for your furry friend: a crate, collar and leash, food and water dishes, grooming tools, bedding, toys, puppy pads, and a veterinarian-recommended food. Additionally, there are other optional, but highly recommended items that may make the transition smoother for you and your Poodle: a treat pouch, toothbrush and toothpaste, nail clippers, tick and flea treatment, a life jacket, tick removal tool, and creams and ointments for any skin irritations.
Size can vary between breeds of Poodles, so it can be difficult to give an absolute answer as to the size your Poodle puppy will be. Typically, a standard Poodle should weigh between 45 and 70 pounds and stand between 15 and 22 inches in height, whilst mini Poodles should be between 10 and 15 pounds and 11 and 15 inches tall. Toy Poodles are generally much smaller, typically between 4 and 6 pounds and 6 to 8 inches tall. Ultimately, the size of your Poodle puppy will depend on its breed and the genetic makeup of its parents.
Poodles require a moderate amount of daily exercise. They typically benefit from multiple walks throughout the day, playtime in a fenced yard, and occasional dates at the dog park or with another pup. Healthy poodles should receive around 30 minutes to an hour of physical activity daily; more physically demanding activities can be done twice a week, such as running or extended hikes in appropriate terrain. Additionally, poodles also need mental stimulation daily and can enjoy having puzzle toys, agility training, and hide-and-seek games played with them.
Poodles, with their intelligence and easy-going demeanor, make great family dogs. Poodles require minimal grooming to keep their coats in good condition and they are eager to please their owners. Although small in size, they often to serve as protective watchdogs. As long as poodles receive plenty of walks, playtime and training, combined with companionship, they prove to be loyal, trustworthy and devoted family dogs. Not only do they efficiently handle regular pet duties, such as fetching, they also excel at more complex commands, making them a wonderful addition to any family.
Training a Poodle is not necessarily an easy task, but it can be mastered with dedication and consistency. While the process may take some time and effort, the rewards that it brings make it worth it. Poodles are generally known for their intelligence, which makes them receptive to training. To have a successful training experience, it is important to provide your Poodle with motivation and positive reinforcement. This will help to reinforce good behaviors and discourage bad ones. The key to success is to use a consistent and positive approach when disciplining your Poodle.
