Questions & Answers
Poodles are a very intelligent breed of dog that can learn up to 200 commands and words. They also have a unique look that notably includes their curly coat and pom-pom style haircuts. In fact, their coats are so water resistant that they used to be the breed of choice by duck hunters. They come in a variety of sizes, too! Standard poodles are the breed’s largest, weighing anywhere from 45-70 lbs. This is followed by the miniature poodle, which is around 10-15 lbs.
Poodles are considered to be low-shedding dogs and with the right care, they can even be considered non-shedding. They do not shed as much hair as other dog breeds, however, they do require regular grooming to keep their coat healthy and to minimize shedding. For example, regular brushing and haircuts can help keep the coat healthy and reduce shedding. Additionally, adjusting the diet can also help reduce shedding, for example, feeding a high-quality diet rich in omega 3 fatty acids can help keep the coat and skin healthy and reduce shedding.
Poodles, just like any other dog breed, should not be given foods that are high in fat, such as bacon or processed meats. Additionally, cooked bones should be avoided, as they can be a choking hazard and can splinter when chewed. Moreover, human food, such as chocolate, can be toxic to dogs, and this applies to Poodles as well. On the other hand, many "people foods" are safe for Poodles, such as small bits of fresh vegetables, plain yogurt, and natural peanut butter. However, treats should be given in moderation.
Before getting a Poodle, it is important to invest in some essentials to help you create a comfortable and safe environment for your pet. Some necessities include a collar, leash, water and food bowls, fun and durable chew toys, and grooming tools such as a brush, nail clippers and a toothbrush. It is also important to ensure that you have enough space in your home and that you find an experienced vet who specializes in poodles. Additionally, it is crucial to secure a quality dog food and of course enough of it for your pup.
Poodles come in three sizes Standard, Miniature, and Toy, with sizes ranging from 15 inches to less than ten inches. The Standard Poodle is an impressive size, often measuring around 15 inches at the withers and weighing anywhere between 40 to 70 pounds. The Miniature Poodle is considerably smaller, usually measuring around 11 to 14 inches at the withers and weighing more in the slight range of 15 to 17 pounds. Lastly, the Toy Poodle is the smallest, measuring up to ten inches at the withers and weighing about 6 to 9 pounds.
Poodles are certainly not averse to swimming! In fact, the majority of Poodles do enjoy spending time in the water. Swimming is a great exercise for Poodles and is beneficial in keeping them fit and healthy. Poodles are strong swimmers that have many qualities which make them a natural in the water. They have webbed feet, a waterproof double coat, buoyancy from their body shape and strong paddling muscles in the hindquarters. Many Poodles excel at water activities such as dock diving or international retrieving competition.
Poodles have a reputation for being one of the friendliest breeds and do tend to get along with other pets, provided they are introduced properly and allowed to get to know each other in a properly supervised environment. Proper socialization is an important part of education for any breed, but especially for Poodles since they often form strong bonds with their owners and often greet strangers with suspicion or fear. When introducing a new pet to a Poodle, it's important to take it slow and allow the animals to get used to their company properly and gradually.
Poodles are exceptionally smart, considered to be one of the smartest dog breeds out there! Poodles have been trained to do all kinds of tasks, from fetching and carrying items to opening doors and performing circus stunts. They can be taught to recognize facial expressions and interpret verbal commands, and some can even learn to identify objects from labels. Poodles often work as service dogs and excel in the dog sport of obedience. Their keen intelligence is also evidenced by their ability to remember commands and directions long after they've been taught.
