Questions & Answers
Poodles are a highly popular breed of dog which is classified as a non-sporting breed. These active and intelligent dogs are divided into Standard, Miniature, and Toy categories, each with their own obedient and loving personality. They are known for being hypoallergenic, having a vast variety of coat colors, and being one of the most trainable breeds. Standard Poodles are the largest variety and can be up to 23 inches tall, while Miniature Poodles grow up to 17 inches tall and Toy Poodles get as big as 11 inches.
Every person can be different when it comes to allergies, so whether or not a Poodle would cause you to have allergies is hard to say with certainty. On the one hand, some people might be allergic to the dog’s fur or saliva, which could cause them to sneeze, have itchy eyes, have a stuffy nose, or other allergic reactions. On the other hand, some people may not have an allergic reaction to Poodle dogs at all.
Poodles should not be fed human food, such as junk food, processed food, or food that is high in fat or sodium. While it is fine to give them some treats, like bits of lean meats or small pieces of fruit, it is important to remember that most treats should not exceed 10% of their total daily caloric intake. Additionally, Poodles should not be given anything that is high in sugar because it can lead to dental problems and obesity. Additionally, bones should never be fed to Poodles.
Before getting a Poodle, some essentials that should be bought include quality food for their age, size, and activity level, a secure, escape-proof crate and comfortable bedding, grooming supplies like shampoo, a brush, and nail clippers, appropriate toys for playtime and mental stimulation, and a retractable leash and comfortable collar. Additionally, having ample area to walk and exercise the dog is important, and some pups will need an extra layer of protection in the form of a dog coat or sweater.
Poodles come in four sizes – Toy, Miniature, Standard, and Giant. Toy Poodles are typically up to 10 inches tall, stand on their hind legs, and weigh about six pounds. Miniature Poodles are 11to 15-inch-tall, stand on their hind legs and weigh between six and nine pounds. Standard Poodles are 15 to 18 inches tall and over 45 pounds. The largest size, Giant Poodles, are usually over 18 inches tall and weigh more than 45 pounds.
Yes, Poodles typically enjoy taking a dip in the water! They are a breed that generally takes to swimming quite naturally. Poodle owners find that their canine companions not only enjoy the water, but they excel at it. Poodles are known for their love of swimming because of their strong webbed feet. Swimming also provides exercise, mental stimulation and promotes healthy social interaction for your poodle.
Generally, Poodles are known to be friendly and get along with other pets. While they may have some initial curiosity around other animals, it is not uncommon for Poodles to settle into environments with multiple pets with ease, making them a great addition to many pet-friendly homes. Of course, how well Poodles get along with other pets largely depends on the individual pet, with some having more socialized personalities than others. Therefore, it is essential to watch the behavior of the pets when they first interact and take necessary measures to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for all the animals.
Training a Poodle involves using positive reinforcement techniques, such as offering treats or verbal praise when the desired behavior is displayed. You should be consistent and patient with your training, and keep your training sessions short and positive. Start basic: teaching your pup their name, how to sit and stay, and how to go potty outside. Once your pup has mastered the basics, you can move on to more advanced behaviors like shaking hands and walking on a leash. Building a strong foundation of obedience and trust now will only benefit you and your pup later.
