Questions & Answers
Poodles are a beloved breed of dog that have a fascinating history! They are believed to have originated from France centuries ago and were initially used as working dogs for retrieving objects from water. Of the three primary poodle sizes (standard, miniature, and toy) the standard poodle is the oldest and tallest. When trimmed for show, the coat is uniquely scissored into various shapes. Some of these clips, such as the "continental" and "English saddle," actually provide the pooch with protection against cold water while still looking stylish.
Poodle coats are unique and easily-recognizable. They are composed of tight curls that range in texture from wiry to soft and cottony. The most common colors are white, silver, black, brown, apricot, and cream with various shading. Although poodles have a single-layer coat, it still requires regular brushing and occasional bathing to help keep the curls from matting. An even more intensive and therapeutic grooming regimen is available, including scissoring and clipping of the fur to enhance the poodle's classic shape or create a more modern style.
Poodles should not be given food items such as beans, onions, garlic, avocados, raisins, grapes, macadamia nuts, or anything with chocolate in it. Foods that are too salty, fatty, or sugary should also be avoided. Poodles may also be sensitive to certain preservatives and food colorings found in processed dog food, so it is best to avoid processed foods altogether and provide homemade meals for your dog.
Before getting a Poodle, it's important to consider all the essentials necessary to care for your pup. These include toys, a waterproof bed, food and water dishes, a sturdy leash, brushing supplies, a crate or kennel, quality pet food, and a collar with identification tags. Additionally, you should look into professional grooming services, pet insurance, and training classes for your Poodle. It is also important to learn all you can about the breed, and make sure to socialize your pup with other dogs.
Poodles come in three different sizes Toy, Miniature, and Standard. The Toy Poodle is the smallest, typically growing to 10 inches or less and weighing under 6-7 pounds. The Miniature Poodle is slightly larger, typically standing from 11-15 inches and weighing in from 10-15 pounds. The largest is the Standard Poodle, which can grow up to 22 inches tall and weigh up to 70 pounds. Though larger than the other two varieties, the Standard Poodle is still considered a small or miniature breed according to the American Kennel Club (AKC).
It's generally recommended that Poodles be walked at least 30 minutes per day for physical and mental stimulation. However, since they are bred to be companion dogs, they can often benefit from longer walks and more activity than other breeds. Depending on the individual age and fitness level of your Poodle, you may need to adjust the amount of activity or the duration of the walks. Some Poodles may need up to an hour of exercise each day, while others may need significantly less.
Poodles are known for being intelligent and loyal companions, making them excellent pets for families with kids. Their energetic, yet nonaggressive nature enables them to fit into households that are lively and full of activity. They are also quite intuitive and responsive when playing with children. Poodles are highly trainable and can be easily taught to obey basic commands, helping to keep kids safe when interacting with their pet. Despite their small size, poodles are quite resilient and can handle the rough housing that can often accompany kids playing with their pet.
Training a Poodle is essential for keeping them happy and healthy. It can help to strengthen the bond between you and your pup, while ensuring they understand your expectations. To begin training, start by having your pup learn the basic commands like sit, stay, come, and stop. Start with one command each day and use positive reinforcement like treats or verbal praise to encourage behavior that earns you praise. To help keep your pup's attention, keep training sessions short and sweet. Use toys and activities to keep training fun and interesting.
